Summary
Magnus has a final job to do.
He holds onto the vision of marrying Alexander, of living with him and waking up next to him everyday of the rest of his life and smiled sadly. “Never thought I’d be a runaway groom.”
I never thought I’d meet anyone like you.
I never knew I could feel this happy.
I never knew I could feel this much love for someone else, and be loved back just as fiercely.Magnus watches as a tear slips down Alexander’s cheek, and Magnus feels the floodgates behind his own eyes threaten to fall. A part of him longs to close the portal above him, wipe away Alexander’s tears and tell him that they’d find another way to close the rift.
But he can’t.
He knows there’s no other way.
Magnus takes one last look at his Alexander, and flies away forever.
A slightly different retelling of the events at the end of season three where Magnus embraces his powers in Edom, doesn't just wait for Lilith to assemble her army to kill him and tries to get back to Alexander.

Magnus’ eyes welled up with tears as he kept looking at Alec’s face, his eyes flickering up and down the hunter’s face, wanting to remember every single thing. He wanted to burn Alec’s face into his memory. His eyes stopped on Alec’s hazel ones in the end, thumb gently caressing the other’s cheek and Magnus had to take in a deep breath to get rid of the knife that was being repeatedly stabbed into his chest. “Look what I have waiting for me,” he then stammered, but kept the cheerful expression despite the pain in his heart.

'Wait… Did you say 'years’?’ Magnus’ face was showing nothing more than confusion.
'You don’t know how long you were gone?’
'I….’ He tried to make something out of the mess inside his head. 'I thought it wasn’t more than three, maybe four weeks’
'It’s been almost five years since you were taken, Magnus’ She answered touching his hand.
Five years. The thought not really making sense in his brain. Did time in Edom really pass so differently? When he’d tried to get back he hadn’t been thinking that for everyone it would be like he’d risen from the dead. He’d thought he was gonna go back home, to his Alexander, and his friends, and they would try to make everything go back to normal and… Then the realization hit him.
'Alexander, how is Alexander?’ He asked pinning his eyes to her face.

Alec was frustrated and when Alec got frustrated, expensive coffee makers and dull paperwork that the Government said he needed to do tended to burn in hellfire until there was nothing left but ash and a smell that took him far too long to get out of the furniture. The espresso machine was (purposefully, he was fairly certain) acting up and had refused to make a single even remotely palatable cup all morning, his delivery of beans to restock his inventory for the next week was late and his sister, who had promised to be here two hours ago to relieve him, was nowhere to be seen. So yes, if there was a slight smell of brimstone and freshly-printed staff schedules wafting in from his office, well…Alec was going to continue to ignore that for just a little bit longer.
