Summary
David Jacobs was not in love with Jack Kelly.
Except he was absolutely in love with Jack Kelly, which was very unfortunate, because Jack Kelly was officially his brother-in-law. David is forced to grapple with what exactly this love entails as he takes on the gargantuan task of hiding his affections from everyone he holds close. There's only so much a man can take before he snaps.

Summary
It’s unfortunate to be sitting in one now, gnawing at his nails as he tries to keep his head above water. His knee bounces, and with every bounce, his brand new Vans squeak against the tile floor. Not broken in yet. He bought them on sale as a Christmas gift for himself three months ago, and just hadn’t felt the urge to wear them yet, but he finally wore a hole in the sole of his other pair and today is his first day wearing them and they’re uncomfortable and he just wants to scream. Had he known he would be driving three and a half hours today, he would have just sucked it up and wore the old pair. But these things are unpredictable.
At least, most of the time. Jack knew something was wrong. He knew something would happen. He just didn’t know it would be this bad, and he hates himself for it.

“I’m here,” Davey started, “because I figured out that I was… like these people. And I wanted to know more. To meet someone like me. To have someone make sense of it all.”
Jack was quiet for a moment, then two, spending that time sizing Davey up, till he seemed to reach a new conclusion. A smile spread slow over his face, and he said, “Dunno if I’m that right person for that, Dave.”
“I never said I wanted it to be you.” His tone matched Jack’s, his words lies just as Jack’s had been, but both spoken so lightly that the truth was clear as if it had been spoken aloud.
Jack laughed, shorter and breathier than all of the previous, and pushed his glass away. “I like you,” he said, as if it were so simple.
Then again, Davey thought, maybe it was.

Summary
Something deep inside him told David that it was manipulation. Children were already easy to manipulate, let alone a kid like Les. He was stubborn, but loyal to a fault. When Jack started signing with him, that was an open invitation for Les to decide he was good no matter how many times David and Sarah explained that knowing sign language doesn’t make them a good person. Somehow, Les still hadn’t fully accepted that.
David couldn’t blame him too much. The kid lived in a world where people overwhelmingly thought of him like a pet more than a child and he’d never gotten to experience the deaf school back home. Les had never experienced the ability to just live–if someone had taken the time to learn an extra language and communicate with him, they were on his side. While it was a nice idea and the last thing anyone wanted Les to do was grow up quicker, it wasn’t true and he’d get hurt sooner or later.
David just had a feeling that ‘later’ would come sooner with Jack in the picture.

A trip to New York in the summer of 2014 wasn't supposed to be life-changing; David had only been there for a friend. One ghostly encounter later, and he finds himself waking up in 1898. Adjusting to a new life, a new society with new people, is difficult enough, but David just had to go and get himself involved in a strike, all because one of the newsies has very familiar eyes.

David shook his head in confusion. “What are you talking about? You should agree with them, there is something wrong with me…” He couldn’t help the way some of his self-doubt showed in his voice. Albert only shook his head in response. “No Davey, there ain’t anything wrong with you… I don’t know if you is, but ya might be like me?”
There were four specific moments in David's life where he felt like something was wrong with him. Turned out he only needed Albert to tell him he's not as alone in his experiences as he thought he was.
