Leia had loved her husband, fiercely: yet, when grudge had tainted each memory with its poison, Ben Solo too had been charged with the same guilt of his father- to be honest, he never knew which kind of guilt, but he was sure things must have gone precisely this way.
He had felt desperate and lonely, through those endless, innumerable days, none of which could be longer or duller than a bare notch carved in a wall, when he marked the time that passed between his father's rushed departures and his encreasingly rare and brief returns.
Had he grown up under the sun- within the sun-, sinking into seas of sand, living on charity and digging scrap like a diver, but with Rey at his side, things could have been different.
Perhaps, his feet would have never threaded the Reproachful Path. -

Because two years is too long of a wait (and Rogue One will be awesome, but it's not exactly recent events!) I'm working on this taking the reins of the story at the end of Force Awakens.
While Finn lies in his coma, Poe sets out to investigate rumours of First Order actions, Rey meets with Luke and begins her training (kinda - Luke is not the optimist he once was) and Leia leads the Resistance, but is she coping with her double loss?
The First Order face a new enemy, and the Resistance must test an old adage - My Enemy's Enemy is my Friend.
That may not always be true.
UPDATE: Just to let any readers know - this will slow down a little over the next fortnight, I have exams and a big project deadline in work, so I'm taking some time to just plan out the next act or two so this doesn't derail while I rush stuff out, here's a glimpse of how much is about to happen: http://imgur.com/d0JUjfz

He sets out to master the elements, meeting various allies along the way: A Combustion Bender named P'Li, a Drunken Water Bender named Nomu, and a certain Metal Bender by the name of Lin Beifong. With the help of some of Aang's old allies, and even some enemies, he wages a war that will change the world forever.
