It's been a long year since Frances' grandfather passed suddenly. Her time in Mepkin is cut far too short as her father insists on moving to New York to open a law firm with Mr. Hamilton. Frances may be little, but she is one observant child, watching the adults in her life crumble around her.

Hamilton’s deep, intelligent, blue eyes with hooded eyelids watered with joy as he gazed fondly at the taller man. His skin was more pale than it had been during the war, with less freckles and more rouge. What Laurens knew was a head of the most vibrant red hair was covered by a thick layer of white powder. He was wearing a tastefully embroidered, dusty blue suit that was not quite simple enough to hide how expensive it obviously was. Love, affection, and excitement wafted off of him, as if he couldn’t contain his energy, much as the moon could not contain the sun’s light during an eclipse.
Laurens was frozen. His mouth slightly parted, his eyes wide, he looked like a man devastated. His ice blue eyes had scarcely looked so afraid. His tanned, scarred, and worn skin had a slight blush, a tinge of love that used to be there, that used to be all consuming, that used to burn him alive like the sun beating down on him at Monmouth. His hair was nearly unpowdered, his dress was plain— it was as if the world had turned upside down. Laurens remembered that song from Yorktown.

Tulip’s Brew was a quaint little coffee shop that had seemingly endless flowers clustered on tables and bursting from corners. John Laurens, the owner of the establishment hummed as he set out pastries in the displays. Like every other morning that started like this, the door was pushed open in a rush as Frances Manning rushed in. John stopped humming along to the song to grin fondly at the teenager, who was bent over huffing.
"Sorry, I’m late John! I swear I would’ve gotten here before opening and helped set up,” she explained in a breathless rush. “But the subway was down because Magentix decided it was a great time to lace the subway tunnels with bombs.” The teenager finished with jazz hands.

Alex's move to America is a big adjustment in his life. Despite being lonely at first, he has an instant connection with a girl he meets. Though this also turns him into a target for her ex-boyfriend, Aaron Burr, the top student at the vicious King Cobra dojo. This turns Alex into the target of the ferocious dojo. Though, with help from a karate master, George Washington, he is eventually able to face this adversary head-on, allowing Alex to make a name for himself.
Years later, Alexander finds himself living a life of grandeur with his loving wife, Eliza, and lively children. Although for Aaron, with the death of his daughter and wife, he finds himself living a less-than-decent lifestyle. Though with encouragement, Aaron finds the motivation to reinvent and reopen the King Cobra dojo for a new purpose. Unfortunately, with the reintroduction of the dojo, Aaron unintentionally reignites his rivalry with Alexander.
