Summary
David has a past. A less-than-squeaky-clean past, actually; one that prompts him to move away from the city in search of a new life, one without a menagerie of disappointments and fallouts.
Katherine is working at a job she's overqualified for, is married to a husband she's not happy with, and is ready to either give up and stay put or throw in the towel. All in all, she's ready for change.
Jack wanted change once, until 'change' turned into 'bad'. He doesn't want 'bad' anymore, but everything- and everyone- around him is changing... even things he thought he knew about himself.

"Racetrack Higgins likes what he's got. It's certainly not a castle but the Lodging House is a bed and food. He gets to spend most days at the races selling papes and watching the horses. He has Jack and Crutchie and the rest of the ’Hattan boys as family and he's got a Brooklyn boy, too, for back up when he needs it. The strike comes around and it fires him up even when it scares him.
So yeah, Race knows how he feels about the strike. It's what the strike brought along with it- or rather, who- that he's not as sure about. Race doesn't blame Davey for the strike but that doesn't mean he likes him."

In the year and a half after the strike, a lot changes. An exploration of Race's feelings towards Davey as Race gradually takes over Jack's responsibilities at the lodging house.

“Pulitzer’s ship has been spotted, decked not too far from here-'' She turns away from Katherine and eyes her crew, their energetic eyes and bold shoulders. They land on the smallest member of her crew and she opens her arms. “From what we can see, Pulitzer aint on board. So we pillage the ship, grab any and all gold you can find.” Her voice takes on an almost grave tone as she scoops Les up and disarms his wooden sword from his flailing arms. “Kill anyone who gets in the way. Got it?”

“If we disband the union-” The words still rang loud and vicious in Cora’s ears, Even as she crawled up the ladder, taking each step slowly under her bare feet metal well-worn and still warmed by the July sun. She had watched it set slowly, casting deeper shadows across the dents of Medda’s face, well worn with age and tinted with a sadness that Cora couldn’t quite understand. She had remembered the older women telling her that Jack would come back because “The newsies are family. Family always comes back together.” Somewhere in the sea of feelings, Cora knew medda was trying her best to comfort her but for the first time since they met, Cora couldn’t find faith in her words.

Dave is stressed. Balancing two jobs, University, and caring for his kid brother is hard enough as it is. But doing it alone? That's what makes it impossible.
Jack is living his dream life in a place he doesn't want to be in. New York is nice, sure--but it's not Santa Fe. But he's got friends here, a nice place to stay and a couple of jobs that pay well. But it's still not enough to convince him that he is where he needs to be.
But Dave's been coming into the cafe where Jack works lately, and there just might be something here to show them both that life is worth living right where they are.

“Are you listening or not?” Katherine demanded, once the noise had died back down,
“Yeah, babe,” Sarah called, “we’re listening.”
Katherine took a moment to smile lovingly down at her girlfriend. “Thank you, now, as I am sure you are all aware it is nearly 120 years since our successful strike!”
Apparently, most of the people in the lodging-house turned boy’s home were not aware of this fact, as the room erupted into shouts and confusion, most of the old newsies cheering at the fact that their impact had lasted that long, while others were just expressing their shock at how long it had been.
“In fact!” Katherine continued over the noise, “It will be exactly 120 years on Saturday!”
“What d’ya wanna do about it, Ace?” Jack called back.
“I think,” she replied at a more normal volume since the room had quietened back down to hear what she had to say, “that we should go on some sort of outing to visit everywhere that was important to us last time.”

It was an unfortunate series of events that moved the Jacobs family from Ohio to New York, but it came with a pay rise for Mayer, a new job for Esther, and a new school for their three children. All three had been struggling at their previous school, bullied for being Jewish, and Esther had high hopes that they would get on better in a state with many more Jewish people around.
Davey and Sarah were fifteen, Les was twelve and unknown to their parents, they were all relieved to be moving to New York- or, back to New York, considering they all had memories of living there before. Sarah called it her past life, Davey just called them memories, without giving it a name that had such huge connotations as Sarah’s did. Les didn’t call it anything, because he was twelve and not yet fully aware of the fact that it set them apart from everyone else.
“It’s called ‘The World’,” Esther was explaining to Sarah as Davey came down the stairs. He still wasn’t used to having a house with two floors, or a room to himself, despite it having been nearly a week since they had moved in.
