L was not afraid of death.
It was a natural aspect for any living being and, in a job like his, it was also something he implicitly sought desperately, since going against the most dangerous criminals in history could only lead to one desire on their part: to take him down. He had spent so many years in that position, hovering between victory and death, that he could hardly be alarmed if the scales tipped against him – especially in a case like that, where Kira could kill him without even touching him, always lurking to strike when he least expected it.
He even got used to the fact that no one would remember him, apart from Watari and Roger, because his position would be filled without anyone noticing. Therefore, he lived with one foot out the door and one foot in the lives of everyone he made the acquaintance of, because it was natural for him to think that he, as a human being, was not worth as much as the figure he represented. However, having got used to it did not mean he had accepted it and, no matter how much he lied that this was the case, that 25th December 2004 had made it more than clear what the truth was: he did not want to be a stranger.

“And nothing they want, or feel, matters more to me than my own happiness.” L dismisses coldly. “Can you honestly tell me you think I feel otherwise?”

After a few more seconds, he tries to move away, but Light holds onto him more tightly, pulling him back, so L stares at him, stunned.
“Just… wait a second, please,” Light mumbles without looking at him, and for the first time, L thinks he understands, at least a little bit. He obeys, rests his forehead against Light’s again, and allows himself to relax.
They sit like that, holding onto each other in silence for what feels like hours. L knows they won’t talk about it later. Perhaps these moments are like fractals; they only exist in the moment. They will get up, let go, continue with the bickering, and never talk about these moments. They’ll continue to act like they never even happened.
They’ll continue to pretend that there are no emotions involved...

But without the case, there's nothing holding us together, Light thinks, and despises the whining tone. His unhappy ruminations are disturbed by L coming over to him and holding out a scrap of paper that looks like it comes from a sweet-wrapper.
The wrapper has a symbol on it. Light turns it around, wondering what it means. His head snaps up as he realises what it is. A clue, a challenge - a sign that L wants to stay in contact with him. He cannot give out clear lines of communication, but this...
L nods, almost imperceptibly, as he sees that Light understands. There's another message in his eyes, though, and Light is awed as he understands it.
Open your heart. Love me.
"Idiot," he mutters, ignoring the groans of the task force that he cannot bring himself to be civil to L even when he is leaving. It doesn't matter. He knows L can see the rest of his message in his eyes. I already do.
