“Huh,” L says, crouching down on his knees to examine Light at eye level. “Never thought I’d see the day.”
“What?” Light asks, leaning away.
“An honest expression on the face of Light Yagami,” L drawls. “You didn’t even try to cover it up with your hand.”
“Oh, fuck off,” Light says, rubbing at the corner of his mouth with a thumb. The smile’s long-gone, but he doesn’t like the thought of L looking at it. Looking at him. “I’ll be dead soon anyway.”
L hums, sliding against the window until he’s sitting as a mirror to Light: knees to his chest, one arm propped against them so his hand hangs down. If he wanted, Light could reach out and grab his hand. “I’m sorry,” L says.
Light jerks slightly, fingers accidentally leaping out to tap against L’s. He burns with the momentary contact. “I – excuse me?”
“It wasn’t honorable, what I did,” he says. “I am not a man of honor, of course. Justice has no time for such sentimentality. But you – I would have liked to dance with you, I think. You deserved that.”
“I would have eaten you alive,” Light whispers. He aches with the urge to press his hot fingertips against his lips.
L’s bony ribcage inflates in a sigh. “It was the case of a lifetime. To solve it before we had even begun – based off a mere technicality – doesn’t it seem a shame to you?”

As far as dipping my toes into lawmane has gone, I really like this fic. It's so interesting thinking about how things could have optionally (not definitely) have gone had Rem decided to be more assertive and take on a more leading role. And as always seeing Light get caught is as deeply satisfying as ever and I loved seeing how L and Misa’s relationship slowly developed, they are so cute, and I can't stand them (affectionate). 💛
