Light stares at L, horrified. "I'm Kira." He is Kira, which means that L has allowed his enemy close enough to learn everything about him, all the weaknesses he doesn't know he has. The next words are almost silent, completely without thought because if he lets himself think Light knows he will never say them. "Kill me."
L's hand tightens on his arm, bruisingly strong. He doesn't answer, and Light tries not to think about how he will die - will L dare spend the time setting up an official execution, or will he simply be shot?
"Light-kun is not to touch the Note, or any other evidence we may acquire."
Light bows his head in acknowledgement.
"Light-kun is not to have further contact with Amane Misa."
Light blinks, unsure why L feels the need to specify that when the remainder of his life will surely be too short -
"Light-kun is not to attempt suicide."
Light looks up, trying to understand what L is saying.
L stares back at him. "I am petty and immature. Now that we have a sure method of telling whether Light-kun is Light-kun or Kira-kun, I have no intention of losing the first and only person who has marked me with something other than a wound."
It is, Light decides afterwards, the worst possible place for a first kiss. At the time it happens, he is too busy mapping the inside of L's mouth with his tongue for rational considerations.

When the mass murderer known as Kira started targetting criminals, it was only a matter of time until he found Beyond Birthday, the culprit behind the LABB Murders case. L, the world's greatest detective, made a choice: take B out of prison, delete all information that could show his name or his face in all the possible records, and relocate him somewhere safe.
Now, years after the Kira case has been closed and Light and L have reached an agreement of sorts, Light stumbles onto the fact L protected a serial killer for his own interest. It's not jealousy to try to find this man and kill him, it's just Kira working to cleanse the world of evil. At least, that's what he tells himself.

Summary
Nothing was supposed to go wrong. The false execution was to test Light and Misa of being Kira, it wasn't supposed to lead to this.
After the incident, Light had not spoken a word, and was diagnosed with having been traumatized into silence.
But L knew Light understood what a significant move that would be in their little game of cat and mouse, turning the task force against the detective, and them now firmly believing in Light's innocence. L was convinced Light was faking the whole thing, and he was going to prove it.

"Shit… of all times, it had to be now…" he whispered, low, as if it were a secret.
He swallowed hard, took a breath and called out in a trembling voice:
"L… I… I need to go to the bathroom."
The sound of the chains echoed in the silence, the clinking waking the detective, who slowly lifted his eyes. In seconds, the drowsiness disappeared from his face. L’s cold, piercing gaze swept across the room and landed on the bed.
Light held his breath. L didn’t need to ask. One look at the stain on the sheets and the situation revealed itself without a word.
