Light stares at him. He doesn’t know what to do. If he weren’t chained to him he’d get up, get him water and a tissue but he can’t do that, can’t do anything but stay here, looking as L falls apart.

He feels like he needs to be protected. His skin is hot against Light’s; before they’d slept in the same bed Light has assumed that L would be a cold-blooded thing but he runs like a furnace.

The Task Force is a non-issue and he knows L just about as well as he knows his idealist, inferior self, so he'll shepherd these lambs to the slaughter right under their noses. His memory gambit is complete - all he needs to do is 'get rid of it'.
