“I’m not one for consolation prizes,” Akechi’s cognition boomed, Ren craning his neck up, up, up, just to see past his crouched knees. Before he could even flinch, a massive, gloved hand filled his vision, Akechi’s warped face regarding him with a possession he’s never seen on him in his life. “Though, who am I to deny ownership of a new toy?”
Really, Ren should’ve known something was up the second they confirmed Akechi’s third keyword as beanstalk.

After giving himself as hostage to the cognitive ruler of Akechi Goro's palace, Ren's biggest concern is distracting him long enough for his thieves to form a plan, hopefully getting them and himself out of this castle, alive.
It'd be a lot easier if Akechi's shadow wasn't so honest.

He was flanked on one side by an elderly woman leaning forward and staring at everyone like a hawk, and on the other by a young man in a suit who was frantically typing up an email to his boss about being late for work. Normally, he would have taken a better look around, but he was still half-asleep and he had a long day ahead of him. So he set his briefcase on his lap, kept a tight hold on the handle, and shut his eyes.
And he thought of his mother.

Thus far...
Akechi discovers the phantom thieves' plan for Nov 20 interrogation. He's frustrated with himself for being fooled, and isn't mentally prepared for the version of Ren he meets on the other side of that door. He didn't expect the police to be so rough with him. Seeing Ren like that, hazy, pained, and distant... It reminds Goro of his mother. And things spiral from there.(AU Akechi where he internalizes his trauma responses more.)
Eventually, the casts from persona 3 and 4 will be included as I expand on AU lore and a more complicated semester three. (Think of it as an AU ultimax with p5 and no wrestling rings, haha.)
