The closet in the hall holds the thicker comforter that he sleeps with in the winter. Shane doesn’t recognize his own hands as he yanks it out from the top shelf, watching it tumble onto the floor and trail behind him as he hefts it into his bedroom, laying down on his bed and pulling it over him.
He ducks his head underneath, blanketing his own sight in blue-tinted darkness. The ringing in his ears lessens, the ache behind his eyes softens. Shane knows what he’s done, but maybe if he just doesn’t think the word, it doesn’t have to be true. Maybe he can ignore all of these implications and keep doing what he’s been doing for so long, avoiding the change that looms over him like an executioner’s blade.
The nest is still wrong.
The realization makes his breath catch in his throat. Panic collapses like a dying star in his chest—not an outward explosion, loud and impossible to ignore, but a quiet implosion, the integrity of his choices quickly falling away in the face of instincts he’s been suppressing like this for five years.

There are even reputable agencies who'll help find koopas suitable partners. Maybe this is a really bad idea. What if his body isn't accepted? If this world was anything like the one they'd left, could he even be sure he'd be allowed to peacefully exist if word got out? True, the agency swore not to part with his personal information, but...Luigi was scared. Terrified. But also, he really needed this. Maybe he should take a chance.

“It’s not a tantrum; it’s a statement of fact,” George shot back, pushing himself slightly upright, fighting the sinking feeling. “And don’t you dare try to lecture me on integrity when you spent two years trying to deliberately put me into a wall. You won one bet, Max, and you think you can turn it into some primitive mating ritual. It’s pathetic.”
Max simply looked at him, letting the silence absorb George’s tirade. “So many years my Alpha instincts told me to pull you close, and you, my sweet Princess George, always refused. Always the pride, always the scorn. It’s your personality, isn’t it? The haughty contempt.”
George hissed in anger. “Don’t you dare call me princ—”
Max didn't reach out gently. Instead, he shifted his full weight, leaning heavily over George's torso, pressing his chin near George's neck. He wasn't aggressive, but the sheer mass and proximity of the Alpha was a command.
