In a city similar to New York, in a time similar to American 1920s/1930s, there was a mob of monster known as the Dreemurr Family. One day, two skeleton brothers find a lost child and decide to take care of it while keeping them hidden from the human-hating Don Asgore. These are things that happened in the mob after the child was found.

When the monsters reach the surface it's not as great as everyone hoped. They Frisk is taken away from them and is forced to live with a human family.
Meanwhile Chara and Asriel have latched onto Frisk's soul and are doing what they can to help them.

Frisk met Asriel, and just as soon he was gone. When they came back to their senses it was as if it was all a dream, with their friends huddled around them worriedly, knowing nothing about their encounter.
Soon they'll leave the Underground and everything in it, going back to the human village as if nothing had ever happened. Their friends wait for them at the top of Mt. Ebott, ready for Frisk to join them in an all-new adventure above.
But Frisk finds Chara, and in seconds they learn things they would have never even suspected before. Things they were obviously happier to live without.

... and so they did. Or so you thought, since you were no longer bleeding out at the bottom of Mt. Ebott. Not that you remembered how in the fresh hell that happened, because after cracking your skull open on the way down, you most certainly couldn't recall - not that this was part of the plan, because it most certainly wasn’t (although you can't quite recall what that "plan" was, either).
In fact, none of this was on the agenda that you may or may not have completely forgotten. Not the new monster friends, the familiar human enemies, the everpresent deja-vu, the recurring amnesia fits, the near-death experiences, the shadowy figure constantly leaning over your shoulder...
Or the relentless onslaught of rock/mountain puns that a certain skeleton seems hell-bent on delivering.
Although your road friendship with Sans was a rocky one, those dumb puns were a slippery slope. And if all good things must end, you'd definitely settle for second-best, while you can still remember what that feels like.
