Jean was already slamming the door closed before his sleep-addled brain registered Neil Josten was standing there, holding a small birthday balloon. Neil’s arm darted out and stopped the door before it could shut completely. He pushed the door open again and raised an eyebrow at Jean.
“It’s nice to see you, too, Jean,” Neil said, ignoring Jean’s confusion and stepping into the apartment. He passed the balloon over to Jean, waiting until he finally wrapped his fingers around the stick and took it. “Happy birthday.”

But this: Jeremy sitting in a heap on his living room floor, Jabberwocky Moreau cuddled into his lap, tail lazily wagging? This is something he’s tired of losing, the microdose of his absence—the threat of it being whole if he keeps this up.
He waits for the “I can’t,” braces for it like it’ll land a physical blow. But it comes quietly, softly in the way Jeremy’s knuckles stop behind Jab’s ear; the sudden halt that hits right before the prolonged absence.

“If I was a girl, you could be dancing inside, in the ballroom with everyone else,” Jeremy said miserably, hiding his face in Jean's neck like the coward that he was.
"Jeremy." Jean's hand left his waist, and then he felt a finger tuck under his chin, tilting his face back up until their eyes were level.
"If not with you, I would not be dancing in the first place," Jean told him sternly, "I am exactly where I want to be.”
Jean is an amazing dancer, and Jeremy just wishes he could dance with him.
