Eddie shakes his head. "Forget it, valentines is dumb and stupid anyways." He tells Richie. "You can keep it, if you even want to, it's fucking dumb." He says, each word sounding more like venom to Eddie.
"It's not dumb!" Richie says, catching up with Eddie's fast pace. Eddie stops, looking at Richie.
"Yes it is!" Eddie replies instantly. He throws his hands in the air in exasperation. "This is dumb, this day is dumb! Everything is dumb! Especially with what's going on with you!"

"Do you have any idea how strong a crocodile's jaw is?" asks Eddie.
"Do you?" asks Richie.
Eddie glares at Richie. "They literally clamp down on you and don't let go. A crocodile will drag you into the water and hold you under until you drown! That's how they get you! Their jaws are like iron, Rich."
"Oh, Iron Jaw, new name for a band—called it!" says Richie, reaching all the way over to get a high five from Stan. Stan grabs him by the wrist and puts his hand down.
"Eddie, I think you're thinking of alligators," says Ben.
Mike rolls his eyes. "You know what? Crocodiles or alligators, I'll take my chances."
"Whatever," says Richie. "Catch me sunbathing in Malibu while you get eaten by the crocodile from the black lagoon."
"Both," corrects Stan softly, as if more to himself than anyone else. "For fuck's sake. Florida is known for both. The Everglades is the only place crocodiles and alligators co-exist." Mike bites his lip, fighting back laughter.

The Losers spend an evening at the drive-in watching Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. Call it a drive-in triple date for kids who don't even know they're dating.

“I can’t wait to die in your arms,” Richie says, and then swoons so dramatically that Eddie has to catch him.
“I think you technically die in mine,” Stan says dryly. “Wait, no—”
Richie launches himself at Stan and the two of them almost go down in a tangle of limbs. “What do you think the odds are that we’ll make it to opening night in one piece?” Bev asks Eddie, conversationally.
“Less than zero,” Eddie says, and he pushes Richie through the door so they can all get in the goddamn theater.

“I don’t want to forget you,” Eddie blurts, unable to react to Richie’s needling. Richie’s head snaps towards him, and Eddie amends it by saying, “Any of you. Fuck, Richie. Is that gonna happen to me when I move?”
“I don’t know,” Richie says, and thankfully he doesn’t try to make a joke of it. “I don’t know, Eds. But, but—” His voice fails him for a moment. “At least we know, right? We’ll make plans. We’ll make codes.” He tries to push his usual bravado back into his voice. “You’re gonna have to think of me every time you read Shakespeare for the rest of your life.”
(This pronouncement is halfway true. When Eddie’s freshman English seminar at NYU covers Shakespeare, every class will leave him with such a ferocious ache in his chest that he will visit the student health clinic no less than eight times in the month of January. But the kind nurses there will have no cure for him, and Eddie will be unable to fit Richie’s name into the iambic pentameter he studies.)
(But the boys don’t know that yet, and no one is there to tell them.)

Summary
For almost as long as Eddie can remember, his mom has been a vampire. She secretly feeds on him and him alone in the isolation of their home. He's managed this his whole life, never telling anyone, not even the Losers. After they defeat It, it seems like she gets worse. Hungrier. But what is he supposed to do? She's his mother, after all.
The rest of the Losers don't know exactly what's going on, but they slowly realize that something is horribly wrong. And if Eddie isn't going to tell them the truth, they'll have to figure it out themselves. They'll have to save Eddie before it's too late.

“You look absolutely dead on your feet, Rich, are you okay?” Eddie hears Ben ask, and he looks over, brow furrowed, just in time to see Richie stumble a little bit. He looks pale and dizzy, shaking his head, looking down. Eddie’s heart jumps into his throat.
In the next moment, Richie tries to take a step, but he begins to sway on his feet, and Eddie doesn’t even think before he’s moving.

Richie, of course, did not realise what was happening to him until the full moon. Sure, he knew something was going on, and that it was weird and if he thought about it for too long, scary, but he had ignored it. Richie had gotten good at pushing back things he didn’t want to acknowledge that summer, and his friends were an endless source of distractions. It was easy not to notice until he had no choice.
At least, he figured, he had realised before he did something noticeable, say like, if he had hulked out in the middle of town, howled at the moon and ran through the streets. Richie didn’t think even he could explain himself out of that one.
