    Elizabeth's rejection of Mr. Collins's proposal created a veritable fracas within the Bennet household's female contingent. In Mary's estimation, it was both foolish and tactless, the way they all carried on. As expected, Lydia found a great deal of unabashed amusement in the circumstance while, in her vexation at Lizzie’s conduct, their mother once again descended into near-hysterics.

    What Mary had not anticipated intruding upon her amidst this strange semblance of domestic peace to which she'd grown so accustomed was that she'd have any feelings about the matter at all.
