Neptune was a lot of things.
Silly. Flexible. Really good at math. Introspective. Ice giant. Planet. Blue. Not bound by the confines of reality.
But one of the things Neptune also was, one of the things people often didn't connect back to Neptune was that he was a protector.
Sure, maybe in regards to his orbit and the Kuiper Belt but considering his mental state it was easy to write him off on that.
But Neptune was good at protecting the others from other things, or at least... tries to.
Sometimes at the expense of himself.
OR: 3 times Neptune smiled and tried to protect someone at his own expense, 1 time he questioned if it was enough, and the 1 time he finally cracked.

Hands went up into his hair and yanked- harder and harder, as if the pain would shake him awake. His panic broke the quiet of his orbit, gasps and sobs going unheard. He wanted to run away. He wanted to run, to flee, to leave- to wake up.
To look away.
"Please." Neptune choked, collapsing on the ground. His entire being looked unstable and sickly- even if his gravity felt lighter now. He hated it. He absolutely hated it.
"I'm sorry. Come back" He pleaded through his cries. He hit his head with his fists, multiple times, trying to wake up. Wake up. Give me my moons back.
Give me my babies, and I will never leave my orbit again.
Wake up.
There was no waking.
Just the silence his moons would now never be able to fill.
Or
Neptune hadn't meant for his moons to get hurt.

Sound hurt.
He couldn't help but whimper again- but was silenced by a massive presence that had already been so close to him- wait.
Was he being held?
"Shhh..." Earth heard a gentle shush, followed by the massive arms cradling him closer, moving as if he were made of glass-
As whoever it was picked him up so carefully, and pressed them close to their chest. Close enough to feel the steady rise and fall, as well as-
Warm.
That single thought stopped everything else.
Earth nuzzled into the source of heat on instinct.
Another large hand cradled his head and back, thumb carefully petting his hair. Once the little planet managed to soak up some of the warmth, he tried opening his eyes again.
His vision was still horrible, and it hurt to keep his eyes open- but he was greeted by a mass of yellow, with giant, sparkling rings above their head.

Everyone loves to say that all the crazy stuff started when Neptune asked “Why does Saturn have rings?” Although it’s fair to believe that, I don’t think we can really blame Neptune. He wasn’t trying to cause anything, was just curious. There was nothing malicious, but there was someone who did… Earth. When he met Titan, he got self-conscious, and said “Moons should know their place”, which would lead to Titan and co starting the moon revolution, moon club, system trials, Planet X, Theia, ect. But what if… he never said that? Would the tensions already around the moons still cause a revolution? Would Planet X ever return to the solar system? Would Earth face the memories of Proto and Theia? If so, how would they change? Here is my take.

“Earth…?” The small moon whimpered, gently squeezing the other’s palm carefully hoping to get some sort of response in the current fetal position he was in.
Luna was worried, and he felt useless at the fact that none of the rocky planets were helping out of instinct. Glancing over at the giants, he snarled, he didn’t want any help from them for sure, afterall, they had always been the root of problems, and now they had gone and ruined Earth’s successions out of pure spite.
Especially Jupiter.
Luna puffed his cheeks and turned to look at the rocky planets who were all huddled together anxiously. Mercury had clearly noticed the glimmer in the moon’s eyes signaling for help and he immediately came running through the wide variety of space, crouching down beside the injured planet next to the moon, a large frown plastered onto his face.
