"Jayce stayed in the water, his clawed hand clutching an item tight and close to his body. He pointed to Viktor's hand, letting out a soft whine and another chitter, demanding he was given what he wanted.
Viktor knew that the mer would only get fussy if he didn't listen, so he bent down, and gave him his hand, as demanded.

‘At approximately 3:43PM today, multiple reports regarding a mermaid spotting in the waters of Port Ormos have been received. According to most accounts, the entity had initially created the impression of being an ordinary human female yet this judgement was rapidly discarded as the witnesses observed supposedly serpentine hands beneath the water. However, these claims have yet to be substantiated. In interest of ensuring the safety of local Sumeru citizens, a provisional policy has been implemented on the beach of Port Ormos: Visiting will be limited to 1AM-8AM and 6PM-10PM until the situation at hand is confirmed or resolved to decrease risks to the public.’
An article in the papers relating to a ‘mermaid’ piques Alhaitham’s interest, and the consequences of diving deeper into the mystery is gaining a girlfriend.

Grinning, Caelus slapped him on the back. “You’d be a good vet! Or, caretaker? Seal keeper? Whatever they’re called.”
“It’s a lot of responsibility, though there’s plenty of intrinsic value. I swear I nearly melt every time I cradle a pup. They’re almost as irresistibly cute as you. Can you even call it a job at that point?”

From the Scots word for ‘seal’, a selkie was a seal who could take on human form. A common element in all the selkie-folk tales, and perhaps the most important, is that in order to shapeshift, they had to cast off their sealskins. Within these magical skins lay the power to return to seal form, and therefore the sea. If this sealskin was lost, or stolen, the creature was doomed to remain in human form until it could be recovered. The most common theme in selkie folklore is one in which a cunning young man acquires, either by trickery or theft, a selkie’s sealskin. This prevents her from returning to the sea, leaving the selkie with no choice but to marry her captor.
