Old man Mullin's farm never went to his family; it was seized by the state for his gambling debts, and they didn't want to pay the debts to gain the farm. So instead the military awarded it to a veteran who is retiring far, far from the front after six years at war. The war between Ferngil Republic and the Gotoro Empire did a lot of damage, and left a lot of current and past veterans dealing with their own demons. One young female veteran finds herself in the Valley, learning about farming, love, and the mystery behind the attack on the Valley two years ago that wiped out all but forty or so Valley residents, destroyed the mine, and destroyed the dozens of farms in what is now called the Cinder-sap forest.
Mostly canon-compliant, but with a few huge, obvious what-ifs...

Now, stuck in a job with no escape, Antonio pulls out the letter his grandpa gave him when he was younger.

Pine Zebbet is tired. Ever since moving to Zuzu City, she can't escape the cloud that covers her.
Sure, she acts bubbly and happy on the surface, greeting people happily. It's all a lie.
There's a weariness to her bones that buries her in depression. It never lets her escape, and she just wants to lay down and sleep and never wake up.
Then Antonio saves her.
Shane is an alcoholic. Depressed, disgusting, and stuck in a dead-end job that steals his soul.
The only break he sees is the cliff just a few minutes from his house, over the edge.
But he can't do that. He has duties. Like his goddaughter, Jas. He's pretty sure she hates him. Like everyone else.
Then two farmers move in.
