He had not considered that months later he would be here with Sam at his door (or what was Sam now, a large tree like limb of many) whistling song about Sybil wanting to see him again. His Sybil. The Sybil he lost all those months, maybe even years, ago. He almost didn't want to believe it, that she was still alive, after having been left so long to believe she'd long since been gone and lost to whatever the Visitor had made of her.
Part of Jasper wanted to fight Sam on being so cruel to him, lying about someone so important waiting for him when it couldn't be true. Not in his head, not with the state of the world now.

Hunger is a terrifying concept.
Hunger for sustenance is a topic well broached, but so uncommonly is the hunger for other things considered when discussing the simple word.
Starvation causes weakness and sufferage, so any living thing able to starve would do their best to avoid it.
Starvation of the mind is quite similar, humans are not unique in seeking stimulation, though they are unique in just how far they'll go for it. How willing the human being is to tear itself apart and lose everything for secrets of the universe.A rat may hurt itself out of bordeom.
But only a human would doom themself and all others in search of knowledge.Sam was once human.
And so he shall be again, the timer reset, now cursed with enlightenment he had so selfishly sought out.
