    “I can do this,” he insists, looking at Vanya, pale and unconscious, at the place where he imagines Ben to be. “I can do this. I’ll get it right. I promise,” and he’s not crying, he’d swear on his life that he’s not, but his eyes are wet. Cinders, maybe. Ash and hot air. He wipes the debris from his face to see them again before he goes. Their eyes are wide and white, their hands outstretched. He wonders if this is what they felt the last time, too, if he’d found their bodies frozen in fear or in despair. “I promise,” he swears again, and he takes one fateful step back.

    At the end of season one, Five decides to go back to the day he first skipped to 2019 rather than take everyone with him, and somehow he succeeds. He has sixteen years to save Ben, help Vanya, avert the apocalypse, and ward off the Commission. He might even save the world.

    On April 1st 2019, the world ended.

    Icarus had indeed flown too close to the sun when Five Hargreeves pushed the limits of his power. The boy desperately yearned to use his powers to time travel and when he succeeded, he found himself trapped in the future apocalypse. Octavia Maddenfield had spent her whole life hiding her ability to shield and protect, only for it to save her when an asteroid collided into the earth, effectively wiping out all of humanity.

    The two teenagers are ecstatic to find that they are no longer alone in the apocalypse, however they must learn to navigate their newfound dynamic as Five tries to time travel back to the past and stop the end of the world from ever happening. Octavia is intrigued by the boy's sarcastic demeanour but also incredibly frustrated by his secretive nature, especially towards his past. And Five despises how easy Octavia can make him vulnerable, he tells himself that he cannot become invested in their obvious connection but something about her is so undeniably captivating.

    Dave freezes, rearing back to look Klaus in the eyes, searching for something and- whatever it is, he seems to find it.

    “You’re serious.”

    “I am.”

    The silence is a yawning, gaping thing that Klaus balances on the edge of, trying to hold steady, waiting.

    And finally, after minutes or seconds or years, between one heartbeat and the next, Dave smiles, and it’s like the sun bracketing the stars, blinding and beautiful and all-consuming.

    “Yes,” Dave breathes emphatically. “Fuckin’ hell, darlin’, but I ain’t ever wanted t’do anythin’ more.”

    Fifty years in the future, or nine, or maybe a whole goddamn lifetime, Five Hargreeves holds a directive from the Handler in trembling fingers, pressing a hand to his bloodied, aching side as he reads aloud:
