Why am I reacting like this? he asks himself. Though deep down, he knows it's because of Rejoice—it always is. It always leads back to him, as though he's still a lingering presence.
His vision blurs and unfocuses, and he swears to himself that he somehow sees Rejoice. But, when he turns to look at him, he's gone. He staggers backward, leaning on the cold deepslate stone for support.
He tries to focus on his breathing, but he's struggling to do so. His head hurts so badly that he wants to throw up. His free hand moves to clutch his head, clenching his eyes shut.
Or Wemmbu is reminded of Rejoice—and his death—and Jaden comforts him.
