After hundreds of years spent as a prisoner confined in the tourmaline walls of a vampire lord’s dungeon, Sebastian finally receives freedom for the first time since his capture and subsequent abuse by none other than his abductor, another vampire spawn called Astarion. Free to leave his crystal cage, he feels hunger, anger, and loss, not having enough time in that dreadful eternity to process these emotions in merely a few hours between their reunion, and the click of the arcane lock finally breaking.
He hungers, Sebastian cannot think clearly under the rapture of his decayed stomach, and with this confusion, a new freedom comes with a host of challenges on what to do. To keep moving forward as a survivor, his journey will take him across realms, helping him gain new skills, rediscover ancient pasts, and give him the time to reclaim most of what he lost when his soul was taken.

Gale of Waterdeep becomes Lord Gale Dekarios, the baron of a small patch of land called Aumarhurst located somewhere along the Sword Coast between Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate. He arrives to find a bewitching diabolist named Wyll for a caretaker and vampire spawn as staff. Wyll has assured Lord Dekarios that their master has been slain and they are free.
As Lord Dekarios attempts to adjust to life in sleepy Ravengard Valley, dark mysteries unfold, and no matter how hard everyone tries to escape their individual pasts, they always come back in the end.

But that all changes when Cazador orders his spawn to retrieve a mysterious magical artifact, no matter the cost, with a tantalizing reward promised to whoever succeeds.
For once, Astarion is blessed with a stroke of luck: his shiny new victim is after the same artifact and may be closer to its retrieval than Cazador. Do the hard work of tracking it down himself? Not really Astarion's style. Let his new victim do it and steal the artifact from her at the last moment? Oh, absolutely.

“I just turned eleven, sir,” she said in a small little voice.“Eleven!” said Cazador in an exaggerated tone, bouncing his leg so she jiggled on his knee. Astarion could hear her little heart racing. “How time does fly. Almost a lady now.”
He looked at Astarion and smiled. “I think our little Lady Vic is old enough to attend a proper ball, don’t you think, Astarion?”
“If it please you, my Master,” he said hollowly. That was always the safest option, when you had nothing else to say.
“Not too late though,” he said indulgently. “But when you’re grown up, you can stay up the whole night.”
He put his arm around her so it settled on her hip, then he patted it warmly, like he was her kindly old grandfather.
But he wasn’t, Astarion screamed inside his own head.
Cazador seemed to be thinking, and affectionately bopped her on the nose.
“Thirteen is quite grown up, don’t you think, little Lady Vic?”

When Astarion had first considered talking to Sephina, he’d imagined doing as he always did — seducing her, and then leaving her craving more. Not getting close, never getting close; always several steps away, too far for her to know him or what he wanted, needed, wished for desperately…
But perhaps he should have known she’d not be the same, he thinks as he takes the dagger from her outstretched hand. Maybe he should have realized that she was special.
She moves her grip on Cazador, roughly forcing the man to kneel, sweeping his legs out from under him with controlled aggression, her strong hand gripping his wrists. With the other now free, she grabs the man’s hair and yanks his head back. Through the gag, Cazador screams. It’s music to Astarion’s sensitive ears.
“Happy birthday, Astarion,” Sephina says, her tone warm and lovely. She loves him. He knows this now, with his whole being. “I hope you like your present.”
Oh, but he does. This is the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for him.
Happy birthday to him, indeed.

Though Gale was immune to Astarion’s feigned charm, he was coming to realize he wasn’t nearly as safe from the authenticity the vampire hid behind it.
