Summary
The color gang has made a habit of occasionally popping down to the outernet to explore or visit Purple. The problem was that sometimes someone would bring a little bit of the outernet back to the PC in the form of a sickness, usually a cold, since none of them were used to such things. Orange, however, was an exception. She never brought a bug back with her or caught one that was going around after everyone got home. Even Blue fell ill once or twice, but never Orange. She was functionally immune.
Until she wasn't.

Summary
As evident by the dark circles under his eyes, Corbiere struggled with insomnia. It wasn't always around, but when found him, its hooks went deep. It gave him the benefit of being the perfect man to keep watch during camping because he was never at risk of dozing off, but it had drawbacks. Drawbacks only Corbiere could feel and see, hatred hissed by ghosts that only existed in his own head.
He'd be struggling anyway, though. Why not do some good for his team while he was at it?

Summary
To adapt was to survive.
For almost his entire life, Pip had it down to a science. He didn't know how old he was anymore, didn't believe he was human anymore, didn't allow himself to trust anymore, but he knew how to adapt. He could lie, run, hide, kill, persuade, pretend, steal, whatever it took to stay alive. There was a rhythm to it and he knew it by heart.
He didn't realize that he'd been running off of assumptions until his tactics began to fail him, until those around him stopped acting like he anticipated. Still, he needed to adapt, no matter how shaken he became. To adapt was to survive. To falter was to die.
As it turned out, there was a lot more to life than that.

Summary
Humanity is contagious, frustratingly so. Even a heartless nonhuman agent of death like Nesdin could catch the odd case of genuine emotion if he wasn't careful. It'd never been an issue before given how his occupation meant he never had to deal with it for long. Emotions would get in the way of his work, so it was for the best that he stop feeling them as quickly as possible.
It meant he was spared grief for his entire existence. Grief was something that had to be built up to, had to be built on a foundation of love and caring, two things that Nesdin avoided feeling like the plague. Those were what got in the way more than anything.
But it was hard for him to not grieve a summoner. Especially this one.

Summary
Life on the estate was difficult, there was no doubt about that. It was difficult, frightful, and strange. They risked their lives every week to fight back monsters that never seemed to stay down for long. Some ended up sacrificed for this cause, but even death wasn't a certainty in this place.
At least the recruits had downtime between the stressful times, and it was in that downtime that they found a new kind of normalcy.

And just what does it mean to be alone? To be lonely?
Warci never needed to think of those things before, never felt the need. The king fool, most foolish of them all, continued to play his pretend games like that was still the case.

Summary
Warci had far more scars than Odette remembered.
The burns that ran down his right side were the most obvious ones, but he had so many more that claimed every single inch of him. It was odd--he was never one to get into fights, had always been the passive one between them. What was stranger was how he was far more willing to explain the more reasonable, newer scars that he'd received while working under the Heiress than those older, more faded scars. The ones that didn't have a clear excuse.
Odette refused to force him to explain, allowed herself to grow used to the sight of them. Yet, the scars that marred his back never stopped troubling her.
They never stopped troubling Warci, either.

Whatever happened, happened. The chips would fall where they would. The dogs would sleep where they lay.
Nothing to do but move forward.

Summary
Piquiri had been there when it happened. He saw Warci get focused down by the swine and the flesh eaters, saw Ville get him back to his feet, saw him get knocked down again. He'd turned on those beasts with a desperate rage, trying to take the target from Warci's back and put it on his own. He'd saved the jester once back before they knew each other, he'd do everything he could to save him now.
He was too deep into the fight to see when Warci stopped moving.

Summary
While Odette waited for Warci's return, Edith waited right there alongside her. They waited together for some time, but then came a fork in the road, a split. Odette had reason to hold onto the past, to hold onto Warci's memory. Edith did not.

Summary
Odette waited. She trusted Warci when he said he'd see her again soon, so she waited.
She waited as the days turned to weeks, the weeks to months.
She waited when her daughter was born without him there to hold her for the first time.
She waited as her daughter grew up, and she waited when she chose to grant shelter to a man on the run.
She waited as everything she and Warci had known and loved fell into disarray.
For eleven years, she waited. She waited until that same man she'd kept under her roof returned to give her an opportunity.
At that point, she'd grown tired of waiting.

Summary
First Cheney, now Riebou...Piquiri's friend group was dwindling, and there was nothing he could do about it. He vowed the day the expedition team brought Riebou back that he wouldn't let this happen again, not to anyone, not if he was there to stop it. It's not long before he's given a chance to do right by that promise, by the people he couldn't save.

Summary
As far as anyone in the gloomy little Hamlet was concerned, Warci was a godsend. A natural-born performer, he was eager to entertain wherever he went, hamming it up for the audience to coax smiles and laughter out of them. He thrived in the spotlight, in the attention, always so caught up in his act that it became difficult to find where the performance ended and where the performer began.
When Piquiri mentioned a poor florist and her young daughter, he found where that line was drawn.

Summary
The Hamlet burned around him, explosions rattled the ground, and howls filled the air. His demons had come back for him, and the only ones at his back were a gruff bounty hunter, a snarky jester, and a skittish vestal. A second chance, yes, but also another chance to fail. Over and over he'd promised "never again," but now it was up to him to keep it.

Summary
Daniil has been living in the Town-on-Gorkhon for a while, long enough for the Town to grow used to him and long enough for him to grow used to it. Yet, it is only on one quiet morning when he can fully understand how far he's come, and just how much the man he sleeps beside every night means to him.

Summary
"It was stupid, of that he was still certain, and maybe she did something bad enough to deserve the hostile treatment she'd get from time-to-time, but death could unhook its talons from her flesh and find someone else to take that evening, because she didn't deserve this ending."
