Summary
Love, Tony thinks, is something dark and insidious. It’s the whispering weight of a devil on the shoulder, a cross around the neck, both choking, suffocating, restricting and denying.
Love is the denier of compassion and justice and revolution; there’s a right answer, Tony thinks, to the trolley problem. Love complicates what is right.
Love is the denier of freedom and lust and the seven deadly, delicious sins. If life is, in fact, about living in the moment, and love demands a past and a future, what, then, is the point? So, Tony decides, love should not exist. He never stops to wonder what it means to be a futurist.

Buck felt his mouth drop open in delight. “Eddie,” he admonished. “Are you calling me a whore?”

Maybe it's because this kind of wanting feels offensive—something he thought he’d snuffed out decades ago, made benign.
He’s always been so good at beating it down, down, down into submission whenever it reared its ugly head; he had a handle on it.
