Summary
Ash just wanted Eiji Okumura’s attention.
He couldn’t justify it, couldn’t unravel the logic of why he always craved the older boy’s dark eyes on him. Ash had spent most of his life being the centre of the show; the disgusting old men in Golzine’s club, the patchwork of gang members who followed his every move like he was a messiah. Even simple passerby seemed to watch him like they were cataloging something glamorous, something other worldly.
He always hated the attention he drew, and yet—he would do anything for Eiji to look at him, to focus on him, to stay with him just a little bit longer.

Summary
Ash didn’t know who was more entranced: the boy who marveled at the gun in his hands, or the boy marveling at hands who treated the gun like it was a foreign object. Eiji cradled it in both palms for a moment, seeming unwilling to fully wrap his fingers around it, before very quickly handing the weapon back.
“Thanks for trusting me with it.” Eiji said, as if Ash knew a single person who’d earned the right to be trusted with a firearm.

Summary
There should be confrontation, rolling tears, sand caught between the cracks of their smiles. There should be answers handed out like festival candy, treasured and sweet -- there’s a perfectly good reason as to why Ash faked his own death, and he’d tell Eiji, and Eiji would let his anger dissipate like the muddy shore beneath their soles. They’d be happy. They’d be relieved.
There should be more than what is given.

“I’m sorry that I’m this way.” His fingers shook as they grazed over Eiji’s cheeks. Brown eyes drifted from one wound to another. They met Ash’s and flooded with something new. “I don’t mean to be like this.”
“I know.”
“I’m–” His gaze flickered from one galaxy to another, as though the stars in Eiji’s eyes or dusted across Eiji’s cheeks would align into the right words. He could no longer trust his voice, every word a whisper. “I’m just sorry.”
It felt like reconciliation, like he could find some divine forgiveness in Eiji’s freckled face if he just looked hard enough.
A prelude to late nights of tending wounds.

What Eiji doesn't understand is that Ash needs savagery. He needs violence and blood. He needs Eiji to shatter him beyond recognition, to turn him back to dust, so he can be melted down and shaped into something new. Something worth loving.
Endless suffering is a heavy burden to bear, and Ash isn't coping.
