Hunk owns a library in his small town, and is happy to spend the rest of his days caring for it. But then Shiro and Keith tornado into his life, those damned cowboys, and Hunk finds himself flipped over. There's something strange about them, though.

Nails sharper than a palmetto leaf tear across his skin in what must have been a gentle touch, but is actually nothing more than searing pain directly to his nerve-endings. He doesn't move, though, because he's absolutely terrified- ashen like a doused fire- and it's that which makes Shiro flinch back and let him go.
"Don't be scared." Comes the panicked voice around him. It's distorted, deep and high all at once, but it's unmistakably Keith's soft rasp that Hunk hears.
Even that doesn't do much to quell the fear taking root in him.

Hunk stabbed the mashed potatoes and felt his mouth drop at how they immediately went back to its original shape. Now he was no expert – actually… Yes. Yes he was.
He put his fork down and laced his fingers together.
“Lance?” He spoke up, calmly pushing the plate away. Lance pulled his gaze away from his book long enough to peer over at him.
“I need your help.”
“With what?”
“So you know how we aren’t supposed to cook meals for other students? Which is a bogus rule by the-”
“Yes, Hunk.” Lance interrupted “I know. You’ve told me a million times, dude.” He said with the air of someone who was far too tired to deal with this. Hunk huffed at his lack of enthusiasm for an obviously important issue.
“I’m going to make an illegal restaurant.” He proclaimed. Lance tilted his head. Hunk stared back at him, refusing to blink.
“You cried the other day because someone ran in the hallway.”
“Excuse me for caring about the safety of our peers!”

So of course, when Matt Holt breaks his arm shortly before the Kerberos mission, it was him of all people who was selected to replace him.
He only had himself to blame. If he'd been listening to the instructors before he solved the supposedly "unsolvable" engineering issue, he'd never have done it, and they never would have looked at him.

"As they trade off sips of sort-of hot chocolate, the closest they're likely to get to the real thing now, Hunk acknowledges in his heart of hearts desserts or even love alone certainly aren't going to be enough to save Shiro if one day he feels the siren call of the bottom of the river. The thought produces a fresh stream of tears he fights to keep inside.
But maybe in the rummage sale of small, strange and most-overlooked bits of their days, ultimately the only things worth having, Shiro will find salvation, if never complete cleansing. That's too much to hope for. But maybe it will be Enough for Shiro-more than enough for him to not exist on autopilot for the sake of other people, and live for his own happiness. It's Hunk's wish for the entire team he adores so unconditionally, and hopes something trite as lovingly-made sweets with contribute even the smallest bit to his cause."
Hunk develops a sixth-sense for detecting when the other paladins are hurting at night. He applies desserts to their respective wounds, although admittedly this results in the unexpected catastrophe of everyone falling for him. God help him.
