The last time Dennis had a conversation with Robby before the day they tumbled down a bridge together was a little over a year ago. It was minutes before dawn. The hallway light was just bright enough to illuminate the horror in the older man’s eyes.
“I’m sorry,” he said to Dennis, choking on the words and rubbing a palm over his eyes. His chest was heaving with breaths as if he'd just witnessed the end of the world instead of holding Dennis naked in his arms.

Summary
Dennis has been hopelessly ogling the married attendings for the past ten months; Hell, since he saw them running the ED on the day of Pittfest. So when Dr. Abbot and Dr. Robby ask Dennis to cover a few shifts for them, he holds no hesitation to comply. Exhausted and run down after taking on the additional shifts, Dennis doesn't put up the effort he knows he should in assuring Jack that he doesn't need to thank him. After an unfortunate incident involving a locker, Jack insists on having Dennis over for dinner with him and Michael as a thank you. At Jack's insistence Dennis obliges. Little does he know, steps taken, cannot be undone. What begins as a simple dinner of gratitude pulls Dennis out of the hospital's fluorescent safety and into a house built on ancient loyalties and iron-clad secrets. As the shadows of the city's mob tensions lengthen over their table, Dennis realizes that some invitations are vows, and some orbits are impossible to escape. “Robby doesn’t even have a team,” Whitaker complained, and the lack of honorific was so obvious in hindsight, though right then Dana had hardly questioned when the resident had gotten so comfortable with the attending. “He just roots for whoever is playing against Philly.”
“City loyalty,” Robby emphasized again, causing the younger man to roll his eyes once more and huff out an exasperated sigh.
“Sorry, kid,” Dana offered to Whitaker. “I’m with Robby on this one. Fuck Philly.”

He’d always been the type to express the need to talk about things to his patients, but he never took his own advice. Then after a conversation about his last vacation, his therapist suggests that equine therapy might be a good option for him. Little did he know he would meet his med student there, and strike up an unlikely bond.

Poor kid, he had time to think before his eyes traveled from the body covered by the heating blanket to the young man's face.
His heart dropped in his chest and his whole body turned cold with fear.
“Oh god…Whitaker?” he said as his eyes landed on the very familiar face.
The young man was deathly pale, skin waxy and lips blue, but there was no doubt in his mind that this was their former med student that he hadn't seen in months lying lifeless on the gurney, body covered in blankets, c-collar around his neck and breathing tube in his mouth and secured to his face.

Dennis doesn't get matched with PTMC or the emergency department. Almost a year later he is brought into the ER in critical condition. By then no one has heard from him in months.

Whitaker swallowed hard. Robby bet that if he held his fingers to the boy’s pulse, it’d beat like a scared rabbit. “Okay?”
Robby scoffed and crossed his arms, losing all of his patience. “So what the hell happened while I was gone to make him look at you like that?”

Robby returns from his sabbatical, alive and with a new attitude change, expecting the Pitt to be the same. It is, for the most part, but as the days pass by, he notices a new development—tension lingering between Dennis and Jack. And for some reason, they won’t tell him what happened when he was away.
