For his final test, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III must kill a dragon. He can't. Every time he catches a glimpse of the Monstrous Nightmare in the arena, all he can are two wide, bright green eyes in place of that sharp yellow glare. Instead, Hiccup chooses to leave Berk.
Astrid looks up at the sky as a shadow passes overhead. She'd been following the chief's son - there was no way any viking could get that good in such a short amount of time, let alone Hiccup. Though as she catches black scales and a familiar green tunic, her heart sinks.

When Hiccup is chosen to kill a dragon as the end test in front of his village, he runs away. He ensures the dragons in the Arena are free to escape as well. He takes to the islands on the edge of trade lanes in case he needs to trade with people to survive. It is far from where Berk Vikings or Hunters go to hunt dragons. Hiccup uses the peace to learn to survive on his own as well as learning Dragonese from Toothless. There they make a home for themselves and they help dragons heal from injuries. Beyond a handful of trades with trusted traders, Hiccup has almost no human contact. Until someone washes up on the beach shore badly injured and he brings them back to his hut.

In an all-or-nothing gamble made from equal parts curiosity and frustration, the gods would bless one individual to end the war within their lifetime. Failure in this would cause the gods to eradicate their creations and start anew.
They chose a boy born on the fifth centennial of the war.
Odin, the All-Father of the Norse gods, neither explicitly helped nor hindered the boy. He gave the boy the heart of a chief, but the body of a runt. He took away the boy’s sight, but gifted the child with wisdom beyond his years.
The Dragoness of the Sky, the Mother of Dragons and Keeper of the Skies, was more generous with her gifts. Her kind had been suffering much more than humans, so she wanted to give the boy a better chance at bringing peace. She gave the boy the soul of a dragon and the compassion her creations desperately needed. With Odin taking away the boy’s sight, she blessed the boy’s other senses to be as sharp as a dragon’s.
He would bring peace if he succeeded or destruction if he failed.
