Summary
Ciri is backed into a corner, her face pale and frightened even as her body remains in a fighting stance as she’s been trained to do. Cornering her there is Jaskier, dagger in his hand and muscles tensed to attack.
Geralt is across the yard in a moment, grabbing Jaskier and hauling him away from Ciri, jumping back when Jaskier turns on him, stabbing upwards with his dagger.
“Jaskier!” Geralt says, ducking another swing. “What the fuck are you doing?!”
(A doppler infiltrates Kaer Morhen, and Geralt has A Very Bad Day).

“Are you going to actually get to it before I bleed to death, or after?” Geralt asks, with a snap in his voice he can’t really control. For all that wounds are nearly old friends at this point, it’s still unpleasant to have unstitched rips in his flesh, and he’d like to get past the panicking portion of the evening.

“Why do you only like some of your clothes?” Jaskier asks thoughtfully, three hours into the day.
Geralt looks to him from the corner of his eye.
“You’ll wear them all eventually,” Jaskier says in a tone that makes it clear he’s hard at work theorizing, “but you’ll wear some of them multiple times before you’ll wear the rest. They’re all black, so I know it can’t be about style.” The quick side glance he gets after that tells Geralt that Jaskier has his doubts about the existence of such a thing to begin with.
(Geralt has sensory issues with his clothes) (Of course he would never think to fix this) (Luckily Jaskier has some thoughts and feelings about it)

He looks to the bard once more, studying him. One of his main reasons for refusing to ever share a bed has been the bard’s constant flirtation, but he seems too sore tonight to do much more than sleep. Given the way his lids are already drooping, he won’t take very long to do even that.
Sighing a bit at his own softness, Geralt stands up, decision made.
“Get in the bed,” he tells him.

“Need isn’t the purpose, witcher,” Jaskier says, emphasizing the last word just enough to let Geralt know he’s peeved at being addressed by something other than his name.
“Then what would be the purpose, bard?” Geralt says the last word with meaning now just to be contrary. After the poet found in him in the spring for a second year of tailing along and being a nuisance, he seems to feel entitled to cordialities Geralt isn’t willing to afford.
“Because it feels good?” The bard says, as if Geralt is missing something obvious.
(Jaskier wants to help Geralt relax) (Geralt is not familiar with this concept even slightly) (Jaskier persists)

“Yeah?” Jaskier says, a bemused smile on his face. “Are you worried about eating stolen goods?”
No, that isn’t what Geralt’s worried about.
