Summary
AU where Ink and Error are old gods and Dream and Nightmare Avians kidnapped from their nest at birth.
Their abductors lock them away from the outside world and bind their wings. They abductors focus on Nightmare, leaving Dream to pass the time alone with daydreams and wistful dying hopes.
They make an unwilling weapon out of Nightmare.
Though Nightmare was sent out on countless assassination missions, Dream has never seen the sky since the day they were abducted, and how he longs for it.
When Nightmare gets injured severely and is unable to take on the next mission, Dream gets a chance to see the outside world again. He crosses paths with Ink and Error, who notice his condition, and... do not take kindly to it.

Summary
Dream is a good Emperor. He's benevolent, active and his long time in the position of power made so long any challenge for the throne is simply unthinkable.
It's a little strange, any outsider might think. Someone in reign for so long, yet so well-beloved? Bizarre. (But they would not understand. Dream's fundamental nature made it impossible for him to be hated.)
Completely unrelated, there's a legend that speaks of an ancient being who always protects the Empire in wartime, even from the days when it was a mere Kingdom. He's known as the Protector.
Dream knows him as Ink, but also as a fellow Immortal.
Ink knows him as Dream, but also as the Guardian. It's fitting to use the, because the other Guardian is long dead. The dead Guardian had been known as Nightmare. He had also been immortal.
How do you kill an Immortal?
Easy. You kill them with another. But that's all in the past now, isn't it?Isn't it?
Someone waits in the shadows; neither immortal nor mortal (not anymore). He is patient. He is waiting. Soon he will become more than immortal or mortal; become a God. Who will stop him?

It was strange. He was a God of the Heart, a Guardian of the Mind—""You are a fool." Ink was quiet but Dream still heard it. "Don't you understand why Nightmare approved of your relationship with Cross?"

What they initially thought would be simple servitude quickly spirals into something much more sinister, and now it's a struggle to survive their day-to-day lives in the castle. Through all that, they survived and escaped. Well, to do that, they did do some...questionable stuff. But Ink reasons it was for the greater good.
Before, the Stars had never resorted to violence. It was a rule they all obeyed
But as Ink sat with more broken bones than those not, he questioned it. Maybe it was the fact that he was lathered in his own dust that he finally rejected the very rule he had lived by for centuries.
If the Crescents weren't going to play nice, neither was he.
