James Fitzjames had always known he was worth more than his circumstances.
He’d been a valiant officer in his mind long before they’d bothered to make him one on paper; he’d traveled hundreds of miles overland alone on special assignment and sailed Clio halfway ‘round the world and he was a war hero who had survived a bullet the likes of which had taken down Lord Nelson himself.
It wasn’t quite enough, they’d said, for captaincy on such a monumental expedition. But there was a way he could prove himself, if he was interested?

Summary
Little caught and held Jopson’s gaze for a long, vibrating moment: there was want there, but that was nothing new. Jopson’s comeliness was known amongst the men as cold was known, as homesickness. A shared discomfort, to have something so lovely and unattainable amongst them—at least Crozier often told him so, especially when his own mouth was too full to answer.
But now Little rose abruptly.
“Sir, thank you. I truly appreciate your generosity. But I do not wish to impose upon yourself and Mr. Jopson.” He glanced uneasily at the decanter of whiskey, now mostly empty. “Truly. It is—too great a gift.”
“I could order you,” Crozier replied.

Summary
“You mustn’t encourage him, Alexander.” An expression of faint disdain crosses Stephen’s face as he glances sidewise down at the pup. “He’s incorrigible enough as is.”
Alexander’s eyes crinkle in a fond, small smile as he strokes the pup’s cheek. “Is that true?” He asks. “Are you incorrigible?”
The pup, Harry, puts on his most earnest face and leans against Alexander’s knee. He’s a lithe little thing, eyes a dark, coppery green beneath a cap of dark, untidy curls. His mouth quietly voluptuous. Alexander rests his hand in Harry’s hair and smiles gently. “No,” he says, speaking to Stephen but gazing at Harry, who keeps his eyes downcast, “he’s a good boy.”
Stephen rolls his eyes and takes a sip of his chenin blanc.
