Summary
In 2225, Earth scientists intercept an asteroid projected to have originated near the 40 Eridani A solar system, discovering an alien virus which drastically transforms human biology upon contact. Realization, an extremist underground science research group, gets their hands on the virus to use on one unfortunate Dr. Ryland Grace.
Many years earlier, a mysterious iron-rich ocean with microscopic alien life was discovered on Mars' new third moon, AT-5. Simon, a former Eden engineer, is one of a group deemed responsible by the Consolidation of Iron for the destruction of Filament Station. Shipped back to Earth as a convict, he's set to endure the torturous effects of this "blood ocean's" parasite in Realization as penance for his crimes.

Stratt is very good at her job. She notices everything.

Simon is a quiet man. Especially – to Grace’s current frustrated fixation – when they’re…being intimate. He knows Simon gets off, he says he enjoys it, he certainly looks like he’s enjoying himself, and gosh is he pretty, with his curls damp from sweat and his face flushed and glowing. Looking up at Grace with his eyes so soft and hazy with pleasure, panting and – wait, that was the current problem, Grace couldn’t get more than breathy pants and choked gasps out of the man.
Once – once – he got a breathy little mm! that absolutely haunts him.
Or: Simon is so quiet in bed, and Grace is a little unhinged about it.

Simon has rarely experienced human contact that wasn't aggressive in some manner. Grace hasn't experienced human contact in a very long time, and the last time he did, it was also aggressive.
So what do they do when they give each other something gentle?
(AKA: mom says it's my turn to use the gay sex laser on my blorbos and i've been waiting for five years to get my hands on this gun

He pictured Simon behind him pressed all along his back, hot and heavy and breathing like he was barely holding himself together. Simon’s hand over his mouth. Grace wanted it so fucking bad. He wanted Simon wound past thinking, past all that restraint. Wanted Simon’s teeth at his neck and Simon’s hand low on his stomach, holding him still while Grace fell apart against him. He wanted Simon making those broken growling sounds into his skin like Grace was prey, or food, or home, or some fucked-up fourth thing Grace didn’t have a word for.
Grace’s knees bent; he was barely standing.
He bit down on his lip to keep quiet and pushed his fingers deeper.
A low breath came from in front of him.
“Grace.”
His eyes snapped open.
Shit.

Summary
Ryland Grace knew he wasn’t a typical alpha. He wasn’t imposing, aggressive (with a couple exceptions proving the rule, he supposed) or dominant in his relationships (especially, ahem, the intimate ones). Sure, he did get protective of people he cared about, his kids especially, but not to a degree as great as any textbook alpha would.
So he knew it for a fact – Ryland Grace was not a typical alpha.
And then Simon came along and turned everything Ryland thought he knew about himself upside down.
That was what was going through Ryland’s mind as he pinned an Eridian to the ground, a deep, guttural growl spilling out over his lips as he bared his teeth, standing between the Eridian and Simon, who was huddling in on himself a few feet away, breathing heavily in distress.
Which only served to make Ryland’s grip on the Eridian tighter.
