At the beginning of Sunshot Campaign, Wei Wuxian was caught and tortured to death. When Jiang Cheng learns of this, he clenched his fists in fury and stormed Qishan. Who did he meet on the way? Lan Wangji.
Why? Xichen had also been caught while he was in the run. While not dead, he was severely traumatized and would flinch at every little sound and touch. Seems like Lan Wangji had been equally drowned in fury at this
The two agree on revenge, finding their fury of their brothers being victims of the Wens a commonplace.
They eventually cause so much terror within Qishan that the Wens spend more time protecting themselves than they do fighting the war. After sometime, they kill everyone within Nightless City minus the innocent. They were never the same. But they tried to fill the void of their brothers by becoming sworn brothers themselves and trying to act like their older siblings.

It's no secret that the second forgotten child of Yunmeng Jiang has always been quite…odd. Never quite acting like a child, yet never as mature as his peers. His cultivation situation is complicated, not seemingly progressing as fast, yet his skills are far beyond the foundation he had made for himself. An enigma just on his own. He makes strange choices out of nowhere, random bouts of improvements, and says unpredictable things.
It's basically common knowledge within Yunmeng Jiang, albeit an open secret not shared to outsiders. So it's no surprise that after the war (which had suspiciously ended way easier than estimated after Jiang Cheng joined in) where all of the pre-existing Jiang disciples and residents died, that it hadn't been explicitly brought to the attention of newer outsiders that were wholly unaware of such an attitude. They had no prior warnings nor rumours to learn of the strange predicament that is Jiang Cheng.
