So, these days when John baits him, it’s mostly knowing that Buck would never give in. It’s fascinating to watch each time it happens though and John can’t get enough of it. The way his tempting words slide right off Buck where with everyone else, they would have sunk their hooks in. The immediate, careless, tempered, “No,” that crawls out of Buck’s throat in that raspy drawl.
Perhaps, John hadn’t been told ‘no’ enough in his life and he’s catching up with it now, collecting each one from Buck’s lips to make up for the hundred times that no one was there to tell him as much in his youth. It drives him crazy that no matter how outrageous or how tame the suggestion is, the answer from Buck would always be no. So he keeps asking.

Gale eventually finds him in their bunk room with Murph.
It’s with equal parts hurt and worry that he takes in John’s slumped form bent near in half in a wobbly chair, elbows on his knees and forehead cradled in the palms of his hands. His shoulders jerk in time with deep, uneven breaths and it’s only then that Gale realizes he’s more than likely been crying, or at least trying not to.
He startles hard as Murph drops his chair back down to all fours legs, his feet swinging down from the table to land on the floor with two solid thumps that echo like gunshots in the tiny space.
It takes everything in Gale not to flinch.

They’ve done this numerous times before, back in flight school. Bucky cosied up to his side in bed, the scruff on his cheek scraping over Gale’s collarbone. It only happened when the nights were cold, and Bucky was sloshed.
Plausible deniability.
In what Gale does now, they would be hard-pressed to find deniability of any kind. Both of them eagerly ignore that Bucky is not drunk enough, and that the woefully public nature of their surroundings in no way resembles the safety of their shared room back in Texas.
Climbing into the cot, Gale tries to temper his rapidly beating heart. Bucky will find a way to snug close enough to plaster his ear to his chest. He will hear it, but won’t comment—skirting the line, never to cross it.
Or, Gale is jealous of Bucky's girls.

If they were back at base, or in flight school, he’d fall to his knees with a giddy smile and ask to suck cock, or to be stepped on, and Gale would laugh and oblige. But now, there’s something coiled deep inside him, an incessant need to be contrary, to get both him and Buck to feel. To feel human again.
“You can try, I guess,” he says eventually, his throat tight.
Gale goes stiff and rolls his shoulders. “You want another fight?”
“I wanna see if you still have it in you. Can you get me flat on my back? Or are you going to end up on yours?”
