“How bad?” Splinter asked, his fingers rubbing gently up and down Leo’s not broken arm.
“Bad.” She replied simply, her voice carefully neutral. “But fixable.”
Mikey laid his hands over Raph’s and Leo’s and squeezed. “Breathe, Leo.”
He does. A broken sob comes out along with a distressed series of clicks. It surprises all of them; Leo hasn’t made those sounds since he was a little kid. Embarrassing, really, but he can’t help it. Everything really hurts.

I also wanted to show how Ezra looks up to Kanan, but stays torn between developing bonds and keeping his distance after being abandoned for seven years.

Donnie’s head was pounding and his limbs felt like wet paper as his senses started to return. Even with fuzzy vision, he could make out a horribly familiar office. Through the large, floor to ceiling window, the rising sun shined right in his eyes. Unfortunately, the ringing in his ears made it hard to distinguish sounds, but he knew the honeyed, singsong voice that was emanating from the lavender blob in front of him.

But the breathing was too fast. It was too fast and Mikey couldn’t stop it and- it didn’t sound like him. He didn’t sound like Mikey.
He didn’t feel like Mikey.
He felt fear.
He heard nothing.
He smelled copper.
Heck, he tasted copper.
And he wished he didn’t see.
But he did. And he saw the Kraang. Worse, the Kraang saw him. It’s eyes could shoot straight through Mikey’s skull with how intently it was staring.

or: leo has insomnia, persistent existential dread, and the capability to mind meld with his twin brother. these three things aren't connected, until they are.

Leo grinned. “‘Course it does! It means we have Twin Telepathy!”
“...Twin Telepathy.” He repeated flatly.
OR
Despite any biological evidence relating to their very different species of turtle proving otherwise, Leo and Donnie are twins. This takes one twin longer to accept than the other.
Well, nothing an apocalypse can't solve!

Summary
To protect his family -and the world- Leo makes the greatest sacrifice by trapping himself in the Prison Dimension with the Kraang. He doesn't expect to ever go home or to survive the Kraang's fury, but he tells himself that his family's safety is all that matters.
Casey, however, doesn't agree.
Opening another gate, Casey drags Leo out of the Prison Dimension and to the safety of New York. Or, the relative safety, as Leo's already been severely wounded by the Kraang and there's half a Technodrome falling from the sky.
But Casey's already lost his sensei. He'll do whatever it takes to keep Leo alive.

It is then, as his eyes travel to follow Michelangelo, that Leo spots the way the water is dripping thicker now, seeping through the concrete of the ceiling. There are signs he has carelessly neglected – the cracking on the stone, the groaning of pipes around them. His cheerful mood snaps.
Something must reflect this in his expression; Mikey pauses, a few feet ahead of him, face twisting to concern.
“Leo –“ he begins, but is interrupted when everything shudders. Rubble drizzles, then throws itself upon them as the roof collapses under the strain of the water pipes.
For a moment, Leonardo’s eyes meet his youngest brother’s and see the terror flash inside them. He barely has time to take another breath before the world caves in, and everything goes black.~
While the brothers are out exploring a new sewer system, the whole thing collapses. With no way to get out and separated from each other, they all face their own struggles, injuries and fears as they fight to survive and find each other.
TLDR: a sewer caves in. Leonardo and his brothers are trapped because I like angst.

"As Leo popped out the manhole cover, his cheeks were immediately attacked with a fierce, cold wind, pricking his skin with a million tiny knives as the rest of his body ascended. The cold twisted in his stomach, hollowing a void as it dug deeper and deeper inside him. Leo’s shoulders hiked up to his ears, quickly aching from the tension yet unwilling to relax. Everything hurt. Like, physically hurt. His body was so stiff and tense but it rattled like he was on top of a washing machine. Leo never remembered being cold hurting so bad."
Mixing my chronic syndrome (which flares to due cold weather) with some good ol' fashion mutant turtles. (More in the notes section). Cold weather and cold blooded species do not mix well, especially so for Leonardo. Fortunately, his willpower is strong, strong enough to push away the fierce side effects of the cold! At least... hopefully for long enough.

Of course, a cake manages to bring Leo closer to death than the literal apocalypse.
Though, Donnie supposes with a small dose of amusement now that the threat is vanquished, he should’ve known something so mediocre would impact them so heavily. Trust their dumb luck.~
Leo has an allergic reaction to strawberries. Donnie now hates the fruit.
I’ve heard a hc that Leo is allergic to strawberries, and so this was written.

Summary
Rain lashes down upon them, merciless, but Orange is only aware of the acute details he takes comfort in on that first night. Red’s spikes slightly dig into his arms. Purple’s breath tickling his cheek. Blue’s claws brushing against his scutes. And, most of all, the soft vocalisations that hum in their throats like a soft lullaby. Chirps and clicks that rumble in their chests, promises of safety and love lining each vibration. They drown out the booms of thunder, wrapping Orange in his own safety net as he closes his eyes. Entirely unique, these sounds mean his brothers are here, that he is safe.

When they were tots, Mikey found comfort in the chirps his brothers would make to calm him. Now, faced with the destruction of their home, he seeks this comfort once more.
TLDR: An excuse to write about chirping turtles because I love the idea.

Summary
It’s been common knowledge, ever since they were tots, that Donnie was the best swimmer.
The discovery had made a five year old Leo pout for a while, but it was true. There was no shell to get in the way of him diving underwater, darting like a swift arrow under the currents.
And, like it was common knowledge that Donnie was the strongest swimmer, it was made aware very early on that Mikey was the weakest.
His brothers took to water easily. They swam as they were born to do, effortless even at such a young age. Mikey, seeing his brothers having fun, had tried to do the same with a giggle and a splash.
It didn’t end well.~
After days of heavy rain, the lair floods with Donnie and Mikey still inside. Born a soft shell, Donnie can easily survive such conditions. Mikey, on the other hand, cannot.
TLDR: the lair floods with Mikey and Donnie still inside, and Donnie is the only one that can swim.

Summary
“Orange!” Something muffled cries for him. He opens his eyes and sees Red’s tearful face peering into his shell. “You okay?! You hurt?!”
His shell may be safe but big brother is crying for him. Slowly, he pulls out of his shell and hooks his arms back around Red’s neck. Red nuzzles his cheek and Mikey hums with happiness.
It’s a story that has been told many times, far into the future. Raph had slipped, and Mikey, sensing he was falling, had retracted into his shell for the first time. Mikey doesn’t remember much, only being happy when he sees Purple and Blue again, and Red’s big smile.~
Mikey, being a box turtle, instinctively hides in his shell at any signs of danger or distress. Every time, his brothers are always there to coax him out, to remind him that everything is safe again eventually.
TLDR: each time Mikey has retracted into his shell out of instinct, and how that develops over the years.
