He drew himself into a tight fetal curl, focusing on his lungs, his chest — forcing it to rise once more through the paralyzing pain to pull in that precious oxygen — then let it fall.
Air tore its way in as uneven gasps, then slipped out of his lungs in a shaky release.
Now… one more time… and again… just… keep ’em… comin’...After returning from a routine trip, Stephen realises he brought back a nasty little souvenir lodged in his arm.
He’s sure he’s keeping things under perfect control — of course. Until the toxin decides he isn’t anymore, and starts dragging his rapidly failing body into a spiraling breakdown — fortunately, he’s not alone in it.

Now we were standing there, shield to shield. I knew - well, I hoped that we both knew very well that this was nothing. Like two wolves snarling at each other, a demonstration of power, without any real intent to harm.
“I have no desire to tear your home apart by playing this game,” he said, breathing a little harder than it would be normal.
“And I have no desire to blow your pompous head off either.” Okay - that wasn’t exactly true.Stephen accidentally ended up in Harry’s universe — where he (of course) shouldn’t even exist.
How can he survive a world where magic is brutally practical and down-to-earth?
And how can two stubborn wiseasses learn to trust each other — when neither of them is used to giving up control?

“Damn it, Stephen. I warned you.” I sounded more desperate than I’d expected.
“I know,” he whispered.
I rested a hand on his shoulder. “Listen to me okay? Campbell’s trying to help you. Let her work.”
“No way… I’ll let a med student… play with my head… with her filthy little magic.” His voice was a bit stronger. He was trying to sit up, grunted, pain pulled his face tight. I helped him up, supporting most of his weight. “Carefully.” I watched his expression, his gaze went more distant again. “Stephen, look at me.” His feverish eyes met with mine.This work is an excerpt (Chapter 16) from my ongoing story We Are Not So Different
I uploaded it separately as well for Whumptober 2025, inspired by the prompt “Concussion”.The story alternates between Stephen’s and Harry’s points of view - chapter-by-chapter - so we get to see the mess through both pairs of eyes.
Now it’s Harry’s turn to narrate.

Summary
His mind, Stephen found as he slipped back to consciousness, was lost in a fog full of muddled thoughts and memories. They flickered away like so many scattered fireflies, disappearing into the mist just as he was about to catch one.
It took a moment to hold properly onto something; when he did, the first coherent thought he was able to process was, I'm alive. This is unexpected.
Stephen finds himself at the tender mercies of Tony Stark, which... turn out to be surprisingly tender, all things considered. As he recovers from his near-death experience, he becomes acquainted with the eccentric billionaire known as "Iron Man" even as he tries to figure out the best way to get away from his hospitality. He has a job to complete, after all.
Directly follows the events of the first story within this series, "Within the Shadows".

Summary
The start of 2019 quickly turns annoying for Tony Stark as Stephen's promise of help gets delayed. He soon discovers that the Order of the Masters of the Mystic Arts have a dire situation that needs to be resolved-and quickly. And if he can get a bit of revenge while helping them get there, all the better for him.
Stephen Strange, in the meanwhile, is caught between two promises with only so much time to give-and two worlds that he has now given his obligation to. His promises are the only way to atone for sins that are not his own, but ones still under his name.
In the meantime, reality slowly breaks at the seams with each passing day.
A direct sequel to "Illuminating the Shadows". Primary characters: Stephen and Tony. Major secondary characters: Wong, Rhodey, Peter, and Vision.

Stephen Strange wakes up in his scrubs on the floor of a surgery room. Tony Stark wakes up in his workshop at Avengers Tower, held in the arms of an old Iron Man armor. Peter Parker wakes up tangled in the sheets of a bunk bed he hadn’t seen in weeks.
The day is 21st September 2014. The universe holds its breath as three time-displaced souls regain their bearings.
