Summary

“Rocky protect family!” Rocky exclaims without hesitating. “Rocky keep safe, pebbles safe, safe, safe, statement.”
Adrian speaks a heartbeat later. “Grace mean if Grace die.”
Rocky stops instantly, whirling back towards me. “Grace will not die. Grace will not die, statement. No choice, no choice, no choice. Rocky choose family. Adrian choose family. Rocky Adrian choose Grace, choose— choose pebbles. Same time, statement. No choice, statement. Rocky fix. Rocky always fix. Promise, promise, promise.”
“But,” I try to say, “if there has to be a choice—”
“No choice, statement,” Rocky repeats, more forcefully this time.

He felt as though he had completed at least 15 laps on Stratt’s Vat from all the people who needed a word with him. What little free time he had between his brief meetings were filled by mind-numbing paperwork that never seemed to shrink in number. And, to top it all off, he had an annoyingly persistent stomach ache that had plagued him since he woke up.’
Or: Grace gets a bad stomach ache just before meeting with the primary Hail Mary crew and blames it on overworking himself. Spoiler alert: it isn’t.

Grace finds himself, no longer busy, standing listlessly at Simon's bedside again. Reaching for his wrist to feel his pulse. It's an odd sort of tactile comfort. An additional confirmation that he's alive, he's fine - even if the monitor plainly displays it. Just the contact is nice, even through the bandages (which are less bloody, Armando must've changed them).
It sends an odd thrill up Grace's spine. A weird giddiness. Makes him lightheaded. Buzzes beneath his skin. Pathetic, right? That's how he feels despite how well he knows that humans are social creatures and, by nature, require physical contact. Touch is something he's been deprived of. Severely. And now Simon is just miraculously here, with warm skin and blood in his vessels and a steady heart rate.

Or, Grace deals with everything that comes with having another person aboard the Hail Mary. Another person who showed up without any logical explanation, severely injured and afraid.

Why would Grace be so scared to admit that he needs help? On Erid, when someone somehow falls sick, the entire family gathers to take care of them. Was that not customary on Earth? Rocky could hardly stomach the thought… humans suffering, cold and alone, with no one to comfort them…
OR: Ryland Grace gets a nasty cough when the Hail Mary is only about halfway to Erid. Rocky doesn’t know what to do, or how to help, until it might be too late.

Summary
Grace did, at some point, learn more about Eridian reproduction systems beyond the brief overview Rocky gave him when they first met. Eridians used to bury their eggs to improve the success of healthy hatchlings. Lower in the ground in its cave systems, Erid’s temperature decreases to a cool 130-150 degrees Fahrenheit. However, with modern technology, Eridians can improve the life expectancy of their young even further by securing the eggs inside incubation machines that cool them down to 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit.
It was super interesting to learn about all of this, and of course he chimed in, “that’s basically my temperature, you know?” But the scientist he was talking to already knew this. They got excited that Grace made the connection anyway.
"Yes, you would be a perfect incubator for Eridian eggs. There wouldn’t be any instinctual fear about predators stealing the eggs, if they were safe inside you."

It probably won’t kill us—we’ve put far too much work into keeping each other alive for that—but every time I try to get closer to see what he’s doing, he acts like I’m trying to murder his firstborn or something and shoos me away so I don’t “ruin Grace surprise”. Jerk.

His friends, dead in the hull. And the building feeling, deep in every cell — every fibre of his body — that something is so incredibly wrong.
Rocky knows this disease. Exhaustion. And all alone in space, there is no cure.
It is a primal requirement that Eridians sleep only under the trusting gaze of their companions. Rocky spends forty-six years alone in space.
