Her hair is blunt from weeks under the burning sun, but he likes the way it falls over her shoulder all the same when she leans closer towards his face. He’s delirious, feels the drool of radiated saliva drip from his mouth. Everything inside him wants to eat her, to tear her to pieces, to dig into her stomach and make a home inside her chest cavity. He wants to kiss her like a dying man, wants to be so deep inside her that there’s no room for anything else, swallow any noise she would make.

Coop tries not to dwell on it—lot easier for him, lot safer for them, if she keeps her mouth shut. Just…well, hell, it’s one of those things that niggles at him, twitching in the back of his mind like a worm on a hook. Dumb fuckin’ fish that he is, Coop lets it draw him in.

Victor is a heavier sleeper than he thinks he is, and the creature knows it, courtesy of their first meeting. When Victor falls asleep that night in the Arctic, the creature sneaks up on the tent, disarms him, and intends to humble him against the tent floor.
Humbling him doesn't look the way either of them imagined it.

Summary
Why do humans call it a crush, anyway? I’ve seen actual crushing, and it’s not romantic; it’s not even vaguely appealing. In fact, it’s pretty horrific. Same for when humans describe love as “falling” for someone, or say they’re “drowning” in sensation. I remain convinced that most of my Preservation humans are simply too naïve to know what these things actually feel like. But, speaking as someone who has fallen, drowned, and been crushed (although, thankfully not all at once), I can say with authority that being with Gurathin is nothing like that.

“...Victor.” he declares then, gesturing towards himself with a breathless, delirious smile. “Victor…” he says one more time, smiling like a fool when he sees his creation mimic his movements, and then the smallest drop of hope lands like honey on his tongue when he hears his own name repeated in a halting, broken voice, confused like a child’s and filled with the same sort of wonder.
“Vic… tor…” his creation murmurs as he gestures to himself, and while Victor’s truly elated for that small show of basic intelligence, he also knows that it’s best not to create unnecessary confusion.
“Ah, no, it’s-” he tries once more with an awkward laugh, before gesturing to himself again. “Me, I am Victor.” he says patiently and with great care, observing how his creation blinks with puzzlement, before twisting his hands and placing them atop a smooth, cool chest. “And you…” he then adds with a lopsided, sardonic grin, because there’s truly only one oblivious choice to be made here. “Your name… is Adam.”
(The day when his creation comes to life, Victor remembers that he’s also his mother’s son.)
