The sun burned without mercy, his water was running low, and his chem supply was almost gone — a bad mix, and an even worse place to make mistakes. Every step demanded a choice, and the wrong ones usually ended as bones half-buried in sand.
But Cooper knew this game. The Wasteland always did. He had lived through the war, fought for what he thought was right, until the very people he trusted turned on him and buried him alive.
Now he was free again.
And freedom didn’t mean peace.
It meant endurance.
Not hope.
Not mercy.
Just the stubborn refusal to stop.
He still had a job to do. To finished what he promiced. And Cooper Howard was not a man who left loose ends. -

Summary
A pre-war veteran finds himself in a terrible situation when he wakes up inside an alien ship, his last memory of the country he fought for being the ever increasing food riots spreading across America.
After escaping from his captors, he finds himself in a world he doesn't recognize as the wasteland greets him in Middle America. In less than a year, his opinion of mankind has withered into bitterness and his only real goal is to enjoy what little happiness he can scrape out from his damaged surroundings.
A bad roll of the dice brings a unique creature into his life, threatening to pull his little slice of home down around him and pull him into a race against monsters borne from the war he was taken from over 200 years earlier.

“Let me go!” she says.
“No,” Charon says. “Look at me.” She refuses, turning her head away with clenched teeth. He yanks her head forward, his hand on her jaw. “I said look at me,” he says, his voice far too even for the vitriol she feels for him, for his kind. Slavers. “You try that again and you will get killed.”
It gives her pause. But just barely.
She bites back, practically spitting the words at him, “You mean you’ll kill me.”
“No,” the ghoul says, releasing her arms. “I am trying to keep you alive.”
“Whatever,” she says, but he sighs.
“Don’t try to run,” Charon says, sounding far more weary than she could have imagined from him. He got what he wanted, didn’t he? He got a little doll for the bargain price of twenty times what her entire net worth had been when she’d been captured. He says, almost gently, “The collar on your neck is made for people like you. For fighters.”
The way he says it— it almost seems— proud?
She scoffs.

Nate stayed until the end, watch his last thread to this world die... then walked away and blew the place to Kingdom Come. The Commonwealth lived.
The monster in the dark was gone.
Life continued on.
They called him a hero.Nate only felt the weight of it all. Of the choices made, the family he lost, of a fight that never really ended for him.
He kept moving, fixing things, doing what people expected. It was easier than stopping. Easier than asking what came next. Sometimes another set of footsteps matched his own. Eyes that saw too much. They never said what it was, too afraid to push.
Then the attacks began.
Progress undone overnight. A new hand pulling strings, possibly from the Institute’s ashes. And whoever it is, they have their eyes set on the Commonwealth's beloved Vault Dweller.
War never changes. It just waits for the right moment to begin again.
And Nate has no idea how many are willing to go to war— for him this time.

The brave set of her jaw doesn’t quite reach her eyes.
He sighs. “You asked what I was? I’m radioactive, sweetheart.” He watches her swallow thickly, her eyes quickly flitting over the scarred expanse of his skin. It’s almost like she’s never seen a ghoul before. “My swimmers are just as likely to kill anything that’s up there as one of your— emergency pills.”
“Oh,” she says, and that’s that.
“Told you you wouldn’t like it,” he says, turning back to looting.

A month out of the ground, the Ghoul stumbles on a girl being assaulted by half a dozen raiders. After a quick, bloody rescue, things take a different turn in more ways than one.
