Tommy can see the exact moment Dream recognises the symbol as he freezes, his grip loosening on Tommy enough to let him fall to his knees on the forest floor.
"Tommy," Dream starts slowly, almost fearfully. "What the fuck have you done? Do you know what you could've brought here? Do you even understand what this means?"

Sam rescues Tommy from the prison, and no one knows he's died. Everything is too loud, too bright, too much. He is bombarded with sensory information, struggling to process it after the nothingness of the Afterlife. It take him three days to leave his house. He's been gone for two weeks, and he hopes that someone has noticed, but on a trip to the hotel he halts as he sees another hotel beside it. And there in the doorway, with matching rings on their fingers and laughing without a care in the world, are Ranboo and Tubbo.
Tommy's been forgotten.
But over the next few weeks, Niki and Jack seek him out. Sometimes individually, sometimes together, but Tommy is always delighted to see them no matter what they do. Who cares about the murder attempts? They're seeking him out! They want to spend time with him, clearly. Tommy misses them; they were friends before New L'Manberg, and he's happy to have them back as friends again.
Or,
I really love guilty villains lol and so Tommy befriends Jack and Niki even as they continually try and kill him until they start questioning their choices. (And Tommy knows about it but what's a little pain when he gets friends in exchange?)

“How can you stand it?” Tubbo asked him on a quiet evening, after Tommy had left.
“Stand what?”
“Tommy.” Tubbo winced, guilt in his eyes. “He’s like a brother to me, and I love him, I do. But lately he’s just been so…”
Angry. Unpredictable. Erratic. Ranboo could fill in the gaps.
Some of the most inconspicuous things would send him into a full-blown panic attack. Tommy got defensive, quickly. Aggressive, even. He pushed people’s buttons and tested limits of patience. He’d swing rapidly between startlingly quiet and talking so much and so loudly, like he was afraid that if he stopped, he’d never start again.
“It’s the only Tommy I’ve ever known,” Ranboo answered with a soft shrug.

Even after one and a half years away, Tommy still remembered the path back to Pogtopia like the back of his hand. He hardly even needed to look as he ducked and weaved under tree branches, clambered over the worn out path by the hill and recognised the exact entrance to the cave system.
He hesitated at the door.
A calming hand gently touched his shoulder, "Come on in, mate. They'll be waiting for you."
"What if... what if they don't want to see me?"
"They do, I promise. Just come inside."
Tubbo gave his hand a small squeeze and sent him a reassuring smile before clambering through the gap in the vines.

Two days before the festival, Tommy and Tubbo run away to start a new life on the other side of the server. One and a half years later, they return to the land that was once their home.

The braids mean something, no matter what others might say. They mean family and trust, they mean bonding an unconditional love for each other. Philza, Technoblade, Wilbur (Ghostbur) and Tommy - they're a family through and through, no matter what, no matter how many wars they fight against each other in or how many betrayals are thrown around.
As long as those hair braids are there, intertwined with gold and glistening beads, then everything is okay. Everything is fine. Their connection is safe.

When Tommy finds out that Ranboo now has a braid, too? He gets the message loud and clear - after what he's done, he's not welcome into their family anymore. He's been replaced.

Summary
Tommy isn't stupid, despite how it looks sometimes. He can tell when he isn't wanted, and a sword to the back is a fairly clear tell of that.
Skip ahead a few years, he's the reigning champion and basically co-runner of a fighting arena nestled snuggly inside of an anarchy server. Going by the title "Phoenix the Head Hunter", he's got some fire-red wings and an entire 'shelf' of heads in his collection from his matches in the Arena.
Coming up on the two year anniversary of him claiming his title, a new fighter appears; no name registered to them and their features covered. This fighter quickly gains everyone's attention, easilly beating one of the Arena veterans his first night fighting. Tommy in specific noticing how similar their style is to someone he used to know.
The Phoenix is always up for new heads on his shelf, but this one might come with more than it first appears.
