Summary
The church bell of La Misión de Cristóbal tolled midnight across the valley. Its clear song rolled over the grassy valley floor and down the small road, little more than a horse trail, between the mission and the town of Concepción. Deep shadows cloaked the land as an ocean of stars whirled above. No moon hung in the sky that night, a bad omen. On a black night such as this, demons were said to wander down from the mountains to claim innocent victims in their sleep.
Nicholas would never have put stock in those old wives’ tales, had he not been exactly the kind of creature they warned about. He stood at the crossroads, where the Concepción road met the larger wagon track that led to Linares in the west. His eyes, unencumbered by the depth of the darkness surrounding him, scanned the road in the direction of the mission. Somewhere out in the wavering grasses, Angelina, wearing the skin of a coyote, prowled through the night, harassing rabbits out of their dens for the fun of hearing their panicked squealing.
Nicholas raised his newly rolled cigarillo to his lips, lit it with the tip of his finger, and took a deep breath.

Summary
He met the vampire on a Sunday. He stood out, a vivid splash of red and gold brocade against the washed out browns and grays of the city of Octovern in the fall. Nicholas stood on the steps of the Church, a bronze dish meant for alms balanced precariously at the foot of the stone visage of Mary, Mother of God, next to him. Ostensibly, he was meant to be collecting alms from late arrivals. In reality, Nicholas had never been allowed in the Church during one of Master Chapel’s sermons. The old priest had always told Nicholas a creature such as he was far too stupid and far too unnatural to hear the Good Word meant for the faithful congregants.
There were hunters and exorcists inside the Church. This was hardly the place for a vampire.
Nicholas knew many of the hunters of the Eye of Michael that would be sitting in the pews of the building behind him, heads bowed in supplication to their almighty God. They were the type to kill a vampire on sight and worry about making sure he actually had human lifeblood on his fangs later.
Nicholas needed to get him out of here.

Wolfwood hadn’t gotten a proper explanation of what he was guarding once anyways. The entities that could speak to him remained silent about this matter.
Nothing but dust lied there, and the grave itself wasn't intricate or pretty at all. Whoever rested there made their anonymity well known. Plain stone, no carvings, if there had been flowers they turned into particles long ago. Yet, when the graveyard pulled him, he had to go.Such was the law of it.
Or what if Wolfwood is a churchgrim and the extended hand of angels, suddenly also wrangling with the squad and uncovering the secrets of the Hopeland Incident.

Through the yellowed curtains, the sun is freed from behind the storm clouds for a moment, bathing Wolfwood’s brown skin in red and gold. The fresh blood in Vash’s veins makes him warm; he reaches up his flesh hand to cup Wolfwood’s cheek. “You don’t hate me,” he says, and he believes it. “If you did, I’d be dead already.”
Wolfwood doesn’t flinch like he expects—rests his cheek in Vash’s palm, his eyelids fluttering. His exhale is shuddering. Then he sits up, still straddling Vash’s hips, the stake rising high over his head, ready to plunge.
“You’re right.”

His eyes scan the darkness, and in the pale refrigerator light, he makes out a tall figure hunched into the fridge, oddly long figures clutching a box of donuts, making distinct sounds of mastication. Stumbling in horror, Wolfwood bumps into the creaky door, triggering a sharp squeal, and the creature’s face snaps towards him. Glowing eyes lock Wolfwood in place as the being slowly straightens, spine popping as it rises to its full height, towering over him. Over the pounding of his heart, he hears a familiar laugh.
"Oh, Wolfwood. It's you."
Wolfwood gasps. "V-...Vash?" He is paralyzed by fear as the creature makes its way towards him, a gnarled hand extending, reaching, grabbing for his throat-
Wolfwood blinks his eyes, suddenly aware of the bag of shredded cheese before him, held in the creature’s outstretched hand. "Here," the figure says, a smile across his face, stretching ear to chin to ear.
