“There you are, Ivory!” Pyro says with forced enthusiasm, walking down the main staircase. “I was just looking for you.”
And then he’s looking at her, which is a lot different.
Ivory stands shaking at the foot of the staircase, pale as her name, her eyes the size of dinner plates. Her tail lashes behind her, her breathing labored. She's covered in blood. Pyro’s heart drops so far he fears it may never be found.

Martin can also hear...other things. Things he’s only ever read about, before. Things like type A subvocalizations. The first time he heard Sasha growl at Tim for using her fancy-brand coffee creamer it was all Martin could do to stop himself from diving under his desk. Or bending over the desk and begging one of them to fuck him. It’s like an entirely new world has opened up to him. A weird, horny new world he wishes he could leave.
Sometimes, though. Sometimes it’s a bit interesting. Like the time Jon says "Have you made any more progress on the Hither-Green case?" but the sub-audible hum in his chest says worried, I am worrying, hello, are you okay, are you safe, and without even thinking about it, Martin responds, “Um, I’m fine, thanks.”
And then Jon gives him such a look of alarm, like Martin has suddenly developed mind-reading powers, or something. Well, it serves him right for badgering Martin until he suffered a spontaneous goddamn sex change, alright, Jon can deal.
