    “Wei Ying,” she let out a deep sigh. “You should talk to him. Just… sleep on it first. I can pick you up and you can stay over. Where are you right now?” she asked, and Wei Ying stopped walking.
    His gaze had been firmly fixed on the sidewalk the entire time, but now that he looked up, he really had no idea where he was.
    “I… let me get to the next street sign,” he sniffled, jogging the rest of the block. “I didn’t make any turns, so I think the crossroads are Cloud and Lotus.” He had just finished saying when a sudden screech of tires made his heart jump in his chest. He spun around to see the blinding shine of headlights.

    or Wei Ying loses his memories one fateful night, and proceeds without them, leaving everyone in his past to wonder what happened to him. 10 years later, with a son, a career, and a new life, his past reemerges through his son, career, and not so new life.

    To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.

    He comes close, though.

    By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.

    What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.

    “Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”

    Lan Wangji stops in his tracks.

Lan Zhan doesn’t follow every project Wei Ying is a part of anymore, doesn’t try to find out if Wei Ying ever mentioned him anywhere, and doesn’t keep the TV on just in case he hears Wei Ying’s voice in a new commercial.

    He has weeks, and even months, when Wei Ying doesn’t even cross his mind at all. And when he does, it is only with a faded kind of fondness, a simmering affection to the memories they shared together.

    He’s happy for the things Wei Ying achieved. There is almost no hurt at all, almost no pain. And almost must be just as good as none.
