    Summary

“You’re shivering,” he says quietly. “Why don’t you come in?”

He would like to do anything but that. Looking at Scar now he can practically see the blood dribbling from the corner of his mouth, shadows playing tricks on his eyes whenever Scar so much as turns his head. His fingers are brands on Grian’s arm, and so he moves away, prying himself out from under his touch and gaze the best he can without shattering further. Scar doesn’t remember. There was no spark of familiarity when Grian asked about anything they’d built together. Only a thick layer of concern.

“I’m sorry,” Grian says on instinct, straightening up a little bit. His wings fold in naturally, and he fights for any semblance of control. Or at least to look a little less crazy. “I– it appears I just had a bad dream.”

(or, Grian is the winner of Third Life. His prize is to remember.)

    Summary

What voices, Scar?” Martyn asks again, a bit closer now, snapping him back to attention.

“You— You know the Secret Keeper voices? When you succeed your task?” Scar asks, the words practically bursting out of him, propelled by the pressure of being kept at bay for so long.

Martyn’s eyes narrow just slightly, his gaze flickering to the Secret Keeper and then back. “Yeah, I’ve heard ‘em. We all have, far as I can tell.”

Scar nods and swallows, pasting on a shaky grin. “I hear them all the time.”

    Summary

Scar can’t answer, too busy trying to control his breathing. It was Grian who had helped him build their home in the desert. It was Grian who had chosen to stay by his side, even after he didn’t have to anymore. It was Grian who had sat on the mountain with him, pointing out the stars and naming them.

It was Grian who had looked at him when they were the only two left, and had said there had to be a winner. It was Grian who had led him back to their mountain, hand in hand, and beat him to death in the shifting sands.

    Grian remembered none of it.

    OR,
The prize of the victor is to forget what they had to do to win. This causes problems for Scar, who has developed a fear of Grian and can’t tell him why.

A word to the wise: I don’t know how the soundproofing was at your last place, but they’ve skimped a bit here. It’s not paper thin, but I’d suggest closing the bedroom window before you get too into your personal business. The rest of the building will thank you, as will I.
