“My name is kind of weird, too, you know.” The other girl sat down in the grass beside her. It was reflex that Deki turned away slightly to shield her ink painting, but the other girl didn’t seem to notice.
“It’s supposed to be Peśa, like from the sacred language, but everyone just calls me Pesha because the adults say it flows more with the dialect.”
“Oh.” Deki didn’t know how to answer that. She always corrected the adults when they said ‘Diki.’“So, I just thought I’d tell you, if you want to be friends.”
It was there so briefly. Deki didn’t know what the feeling was. Warm and so unfamiliar, and she took a good second to look at the other girl as she picked at the grass. Warm, unfamiliar and— she’d imagine this was what others felt when they came home to someone and ate dinner together. Something like home. But just as quickly, she shut it away behind something high and unbreakable. Because Deki knew.

One day, that person had just disappeared. Achara did not fear going to the markets anymore. She didn’t fear travelling alone anymore, but the habit of looking over her shoulder lingered still.
Kraisee couldn’t make that habit go away regardless of what he tried.

Elphaba’s gaze lowers, the weight of her statement pressing down on them. It wraps around Glinda’s throat and squeezes out all the air in her lungs, slowly suffocating her; it feels like barbed wire is pressing into her flesh, the horror of it all stealing her ability to speak.
“You’ve been…” Elphaba starts, her voice hoarse. She pauses, clears her throat, and starts again. “You’ve been one of the few good things in my life, Galinda.”
Glinda swallows past the blockade in her throat. “Nobody calls me that anymore,” she whispers.
Elphaba cracks a weak smile. “You will always be Galinda to me.”
Glinda’s lower lip trembles again, another wave of tears rushing into her burning eyes. Some of them escape her lashes and trace uneven paths down her cheeks, but she blinks the rest of them away.

A mistake during a cheer routine, or failing a class and getting kicked off the team. And Galinda was failing calculus, so she swallowed her pride and quietly signed up for a tutor.
She did not sign up to spend Thursday nights with Fiyero’s ex, but cheerleading was worth it. (She hoped.)
