Like a bad poker player, Light had tells. Granted, the tells wouldn't be obvious had it not been for the iron chain connecting them at the wrist for the past few months — but he had tells. Tells that had become more prominent in the hours since Higuchi's death; tells that had been sparse since Light forfeited his rights and accepted confinement.
Carefully controlled breathing, jaw lightly clenched, rigid shoulders. Light was like an animal pretending to be a human. Something you get uncanny valley from just looking at it.

Their noses were nearly brushing. Light saw for the first time that L’s eyes weren’t black as he had thought, but dark dark brown. The ring of his iris was barely visible around the blown out pupil. A surprisingly strong hand gripped at his arm, clawing. Light could almost hear the thu-thump of L’s dying heart and revelled in it. L’s eyes were wide with shock, and slowly – agonizingly – they blinked closed.
Then L had the raw audacity to sit up. He waved his hands in a swooping flourish; the bow at the end of a great performance. “I decided to not test the notebooks,” said L, apropos to nothing.
