‘She’s right here,’ insisted Holly. ‘She’s fine, Lockwood. Just lie there and rest.’
She was stretching it a bit with all this fine talk but I suppose I was technically all in one piece. ‘I’m OK, Lockwood,’ I assured him. ‘How’re you feeling?’
He grumbled. ‘Been better. Are you bleeding, Luce? I can smell blood.’
Lucy’s brain spins her in circles between chapters 12 and 13 of The Hollow Boy. Some good old fashioned Whumptober angst just in time for the spooky season.

There’s a problem with the Undead.
70 years ago, England began experiencing a rash of reanimated corpses, decaying and deeply blood hungry. The Problem changed the country forever, and soon corporations, seeing green, began to privatize the sanctioned return of your limbless loved one to the grave; assuring the public they could control these horrifying, but not yet endemic, cases. Five years ago, a zombie bit one of the private agents sent to rekill it, sending the nation into an outbreak of apocalyptic proportions.
English teens Lockwood, Lucy and George meet at Waterloo Lines army base after all under the age of 20, the sliver of the population against which the paralyzing fear and deteriorating physical weakness of the Undead are least effective, were forcibly conscripted as a last line defense of those rich enough to survive the first wave.
Eight months ago, their entire squadron deserted.
Three days ago, that squad was split in two. Separated from their band of survivors, ex-conscripts Lucy, George and Lockwood fight to stay alive in the late stages of the zombie apocalypse.

Lockwood frowned. Then why am I so tired, if it was that simple? He and Lucy had kept the rather sluggish specter at bay while George secured the source, it truly hadn’t taken much effort. But for some reason he felt like he could lie down on the ground right that second and take a nap.
Or, in which Lockwood finally catches up on sleep, although not for reasons anyone’s happy about.

Kaz had to admit the traffickers were surprisingly clever – for thick-skulled pirates, at least. He had not expected to be ambushed on the site of his future textile manufacture out of town. Or, well, what was supposed to be the site of his new project. Seeing as he’d been set up, it seemed he would need to find a new abandoned warehouse to repurpose. It was an annoying detail that would have to wait, however, since he was presently tied up to a chair.
Inej's enemies capture Kaz to lure her in a trap. It doesn't end well for them.
