"Pen can sit on your lap." She suggests breezily.
Colin turns to Pen to see how she feels about the suggestion, but he is startled when he finds her frowning at Eloise.
"It's only for an hour, right?" Eloise adds, nonchalantly.
"One hour too many." Pen grits through her teeth, clearly unamused by Eloise's suggestion, and Eloise turns her head around to assess the situation, making an entire show of it, and when her eyes eventually land on her best friend, a mischievous smirk appears on her face.
"Unless you tell me everything I want to know?" Eloise says cryptically, and it's as if she's trying to persuade Penelope into telling her a secret the others are not privy to.
Penelope does not say anything, she glances at Colin and she's looking as if he can help her decide on the decision she has to make, but he's already looking at her, so she turns back to Eloise just as quickly, and if Colin had not been staring at her like a goddamn creep, trying to figure out what her problem with him was, he would not have noticed the subtle look, but Penelope seems to decide to remain tight lipped and Colin can see that she is adamant that Eloise will never know what Eloise might wish to know.

It is not until he buckles her into the back seat of his car that she says anything. “You ot Eweeze,” she mumbles, pretty blue eyes blinking at him. “Coh-win.”
“Want to run that one by me again, kid?”
Kid. He’s called her that since she was five and he was ten. She grimaces and puts her fingers into her mouth, pulling out a wad of soaked, lightly bloody cotton wool. Colin holds out his palm and she drops it in.
“You’re not Eloise,” she repeats, and the words are still warped and fuzzy but much more understandable. Colin balls up the cotton wool and with nowhere else to put it, shoves it in his pocket. “You’re Colin.”
“Good looking out,” Colin says, walking around to the driver’s seat and climbing in. He finds her eyes in the rear view mirror. “I am, in fact, Colin. The same Colin who took you to the hospital this morning, remember?”
Penelope nods solemnly. “You look like Eloise, though,” she tells him. “Same hair. Bet it feels just like hers.”

“No, it is not, Brother,” Colin answered, still shocked by his sudden betrothal, but realising he did not regret it, “Penelope is my best friend. And like mother used to say “you must simply marry the one who feels like your dearest friend”. If I understood her correctly, friendship is the best possible foundation a marriage can have and I for one am glad I will at least have the best possible start for my marriage to Penelope.”
But will best friends ever turn into lovers.
