Shen roule des yeux vers le ciel étoilé.
— C’est moi qui lui ai posé un ultimatum. Je lui ai dit que si elle voulait continuer à me voir, elle obligerait mes tantes à me laisser venir avec un homme au mariage. Mais j’ai parlé trop vite et j’ai oublié qu’il n’y avait pas d’homme en question. Elle a dit oui avant que je puisse aborder ce point délicat, et j’étais bloqué.
Jack le relâche et se met à rire.
— Ça, je vais le dire à Ellis.
— Je sais, soupire Shen d’un air lugubre. Mais je lui dirai que tu t’es fait draguer par tout ce qui bougeait au mariage, donc on est quittes."En échange d'un week-end tous frais payés à Los Angeles, Jack accepte de se faire passer pour le compagnon de Shen au mariage de sa cousine.

— Un code ? propose-t-il enfin.
— Comme quoi ?
— Quand j’étais petit, avec mon cousin, on était fans de Groundhog Day. On avait décidé d’un code pour ce genre de situation.
— Parfait. C’était quoi ?
Abbot hésite un instant, avant de soupirer.
— « Les nénés d’Andie MacDowell. » (Robby n’a jamais fait des efforts aussi titanesques pour rester impassible. Abbot commence à sourire, lui aussi.) Ça va. On avait treize ans, d’accord ?
— Tu illumines ma vie, avoue Robby." -

"— Eurgh. (Organa sort de sa cachette et avale sa coupe de vin naboo.) Ils me traquent depuis des jours pour essayer de me marier à leur prince héritier.
— Vous marier, répète bêtement Din.
Elle hausse les épaules.
— C’est devenu la petite marotte des mêmes sénateurs qui veulent m’écarter. Ils doivent se dire que si je deviens la reine d’une planète paumée, je leur ficherai la paix.
Dans le cerveau de Din, des alarmes se mettent à sonner, qui ressemblent étrangement à celles de son vieux vaisseau, le Razor Crest. Sans doute un truc affectif.
— Mais vous ne voulez pas vous marier.
— Non. (Il se détend un peu.) Du moins, peut-être un jour, mais avec un époux que j’aurai choisi. (Elle devient rêveuse.) J’ai adoré leur tête quand je me suis enfuie avec Han.
Les alarmes s’éteignent pour être remplacées par le chuintement pathétique de la jalousie de Din. Il cherche un sujet neutre pour détourner la conversation.
— Je peux comprendre. Bo-Katan a tenté la même chose avec moi, le cycle dernier.
Elle recrache la dernière gorgée de sa coupe.
— Kriff. Bo-Katan n’a vraiment peur de rien."
