Summary
Leaving for college had always seemed like a fictional event, something that only happened in teen coming-of-age movies. Even as Kei had been filling out his applications and taking his entrance exams, none of it really felt real. Enrolling at Tohoku just meant he’d go there eventually, years from now. His current life wouldn’t change.
As he stared at Yamaguchi’s packed belongings, the reality of the situation finally dawned on him. Yamaguchi wouldn’t be a five-minute walk away anymore. They wouldn’t be going to the same school anymore. They wouldn’t be living their lives side by side together anymore.
Kei thought he had come to grips with the idea of Yamaguchi leaving --that was the whole reason he’d meticulously planned the day after all-- but the weight of this revelation shook him to his very core. He’d always just… assumed that Yamaguchi would be there every step of the way, for the rest of his life. But the acceptance letter to Fukushima university, one of the few things still pinned up to Yamaguchi’s bulletin board, served as a cruel reminder of the distance about to be put between them.

Even after the events transpired, Chuuya Nakahara would never be able to explain why he went down that side street or, better yet, why he was even walking that night at all. He hadn’t been forced to patrol since he was fifteen, and even if he had, that road, while technically Mafia territory, wasn’t part of any patrol he’d ever been a part of. There was no reason, and yet, it was like some unknowable force had commanded him to be there.

“Sooooooo… do you have any specific place in mind Tsukki?” Tadashi asked, looking up at him with his head cocked slightly.
“I do,” Tsukishima responded, not looking down to meet the gaze of his boyfriend, fiddling absentmindedly with his fingers not occupied by Tadashi’s pinky, “but it’s a surprise.’
“Pfft,” Tadashi snorted, “Kei Tsukishima, hater of surprises, planning a surprise himself. This needs to be put in the history books.”
“Hey,” Tsukishima said, flicking Tadashi in the head with his spare hand, “I never said I hated the concept of surprises.”
“Yeah yeah, just ‘surprises for you,’” Tadashi mocked, doing air quotes with his fingers.
“Shut up Yamaguchi.”
“You know you love me.”

“You’re an ass,” Yamaguchi said, shoving Kei off the sidewalk with his elbow.
“And yet here you are all these years later.”
“Tragically,” Yamaguchi sighed, though Kei noticed that he had slowed down to allow him to catch up, “but there are some perks to that.”
“Like what?”
“You can’t keep any secrets from me anymore, I know you like the back of my hand.”
“Pfft, I’m still plenty mysterious.”
“You just like to think that, but you’re an open book to me. It’s all in the eyes,” Yamaguchi said, waggling his eyebrows for dramatic effect.
---In order to prove that Yamaguchi isn't as good at reading him as he thinks, Tsukishima decides to reveal the one secret he knows will shock Yamaguchi.

Kei locked eyes with the tattoo artist, and his heart about dropped out of his chest. The guy standing before him by all accounts should have been intimidating, with his full sleeves of tattoos and countless piercings, yet Kei could only marvel at how... pretty he was. The artist’s long brown hair was half up, revealing at least four piercings on each ear, starkly contrasting his soft features. He looked a little bewildered as he awkwardly waved to Kei.

Kei tried to ignore how Tadashi’s face contorted, how he looked almost physically hurt, his mouth drawn into a tight line. All Kei wanted to do was kiss that expression away, to make this better somehow. But he knew it was a mistake.
